I just have to share a funny story my 7 year old told me when he came home from school yesterday. Yesterday was another of the seemingly endless stream of cupcake events in the class. Sean chose from his stash of treats. He said that everyone in the class was trying to trade him the cupcake for his GF treat! He said, "Mom, I just had to tell them that their food will make me sick and I have my own. They were sad." It made me feel so good. He seems to have really taken his diagnosis in stride.
He also told me that someone wanted to buy the GF banana cake I sent him in his lunch one day last week. Guess GF treats are popular. I only wish some adults I know would be more willing to try our stuff. _________________ -Colleen

I have found if I tell them it is GF I can about guarantee they won't try it. I have just got to the point I set out what I bring and if the try it fine if they don't fine. I made a coffee cake that most people didn't know was GF and I was told after the shower many people asked for the recipe. I took Choc. chip cookies to our church flock group and no one could tell the difference. As expensive as it is to make stuff I almost don't care if they try it but sometimes I just wish they would.

We have went through alot of dietary changes over the years as I was desperately trying to find out why I was sick. It took my kids a good six months to understand that if something is organic it simply means it doesn't have pestisides or additives and perservatives in it and not that it was made of tofu (I know many people like tofu, my kids are not among you). It took awhile for them to believe that xylitol would not have an after taste like nutra-sweet or sweet and low. The night before last I made a GF lasagna and they all waited to take a bite until Dad did and then when he took his second bite they picked up their forks. Somewhere it entered their minds that healthy foods have to taste yucky. I am sure it has nothing to do with my failed cooking experiments over the years! |

This happens ALOT. We take a dish or something for me to eat at parties or gatherings. More times than not...everybody is eating my stuff!!
This isn't a problem, because there's always enough. In someways it feels good that they like and want to eat GF food (they quickly learn that GF does not mean yucky), in other ways it's like..."hey you guys can eat ANYTHING you want here, why are you eating just about the ONLY thing I can have?!?!? Now back off and retreat to your wheat thins or triscuits or pizza".
Oh yeah...the life of a gluten intol LOL _________________ Al

I hear you there. A little over a week ago I bought a package of GF rice chips for me to eat while everyone else had their weekly, weekend gluten fest and low and behold they ate all their "goodies" and then were inhaling mine! I told them to leave them alone that they were for me and they said, "We didn't know these were for you, they're really good." As if everything I eat must not be good. Maybe I should let them believe that and once and a while my teens might leave something for me to eat around here. |
