Many many ice creams are GF. Obviously the ones with cookies (and similar type food) in them are off limits But you still have to check.
The same goes for yogurt. The stuff w/ the granola in it...should be off limits too. _________________ Al

Dairy is OK on a GF diet as long as you don't have any intolerences to it. Either Lactose intolerence or Casein intolerence. Some celiacs may have problems with dairy until their gut heals. Milk protein is difficult for the stomach to break down - so once you gut heals - it's possible for them to tolerate it.
I am more than likely going to have to give up dairy due to a casein intolerence. I want to get tested, but I"ve been experiementing with a casein (and sugar) reduced diet. I believe it is helping. _________________ Al

Is it reasonable to think that if my biospy report said 'total villous atrophy', that I would have a problem with lactose as well as gluten?
If I'm right in thinking that the part of the villi that controls lactase (?) is in the middle of it, then would it follow that I would be lactose intollerant?

Maggie,
I became lactose intollerant about 5 years ago. I was dx with CD in May
2003. Endo showed my villi were completely destroyed also. I have tried both Soy milk and "Lactaid" milk and prefer the "lactaid" as the soy milk is too sweet.
Of course I have the same reaction to ice cream, but just have to have it once in a while.
I have found that several of the gf foods become better tasteing the longer I am on the diet. (Except the really yukkie ones.)
"52" and feeling better everyday.

Many times after the gut has healed, celiacs will be able to tolerate some dairy products again.
Becca - have you tried Almond Milk? It's kind of sweet too. Almond breeze has soy if you are avoid it. Pacific Almond milk does not have soy, but it's grittier.
Stay away from Rice Dream...it is NOT GF!! _________________ Al

Thanks for the tips aklap. I have read several referances to other celiacs being allergic to soy as well as gluten. Do you know if it causes the same symptoms as gulten?
I did know that I might be able to tolerate milk once my villi regrow. I think due to my age and the amount of damage I am probably on the end of the 3-6 years range to expect this to happen. Has anyone you know had positive proof of the healing? (This question is for anyone out there who might know someone.)
Happy Being GF!!!

| I'd stick to all natural ingredients.....look out for the mono/di-glycerides, a hidden source of gluten! |

| What about soy ice creams, and tofutti? I'm lactose intolerant and finding my old cure for an ice cream fix lactaid pill + real ice cream isn't cutting it anymore. The pill is killing my stomach now. Any good suggestions on dairy free ice creams? |

Fortunately I am not LI. I have a friend who is though and he says he can handle all Ben & Jerry's except Cherry Garcia, for whatever reason. Even if he takes Lactaid first. I think all ice creams are not equal.
However, if you can't find a commercial one that works for you, try making your own. You can get a mini ice cream maker, making about a quart, where you freeze the entire core. I got one a couple of years ago for $30. Cheap and easy. I make a great ice cream with coconut milk - it's think and creamy like real ice cream (and not like soy ice creams - sorry but blech!!!).
I usually make it half coconut milk, half cream, a ripe banana, and then sweeten to taste. But for LI you can go all coconut milk. Or if that's too rich for your blood, maybe try half coconut milk, half GF rice milk or soy milk. It's worth an experiment. It's delicious! But beware, homemade ice cream is best eaten soon after being made, otherwise this experiment might turn into an inpenetrable ice burg in your freezer, doomed to being chucked out in the garbage can...
