Would you believe I turned 70 years old August 11, 2004 and on that day the doctor said I had Celiac Disease?

"Well that rocked my boat" ... needless to say here I am getting used to a new diet and maybe finding an answer to some of the problems I had. Thanks to this Celiac Forum I have learned a lot so far... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Idea

Barbara,

WOW!!! I am SOOOO impressed!! My mother turned 74 in Oct. There is no way in heck she'd ever touch a computer!! (kind of ironic if you consider she raised a computer consultant - me Smile) I think that it's super that you are learning and finding out as much as you can about this.

When I first started out on my knowledge quest with all this, I was thankful I had the resources (computer & internet) that I did. It gave me answers that NO one had been able to provide. It's one thing to figure why you feel like crap all the time, but quite another trying to figure out how to eat in a way that keeps you healthy.

I think of all the people that either don't have access to a computer or the abilities to do it - how do they figure out what they can and can't eat. It's difficult. That's why we (me & my wife) have been as active as we can be in getting the word out to people about gluten and the GF diet - both in and out of cyberspace Smile

Barb, glad your are here....learning & helping others Very Happy Rock on Barbara!! (and I don't mean in the chair) hehehe

Thanks Al, I have been using computers since they first came into offices at the Insurance company I worked at and that is about 30 years. They certainly have progressed since then - thank God...

Many seniors are now using computers, many centers are teaching seniors and this is great -- you are right there is so much more out there to learn; it is a world full in awesome information if you take the time to explore. But Twisted Evil Yeh!!! you gotta weed out the bad "junk". Evil or Very Mad

Would love to see more seniors accessing this site, surely there are some out there - I'll pass the word around if you will too.

Have a great day!

Hi Barb and Al,

I work in a doctors office and an elderly couple come in today for their flu shots and the wife has Celiac Sprue. She was in her 60's and she was in a wheelchair due to Osteoporosis. She was diagnosed as a youngster but was never told it was a life long disease and now she is paying the price.

But what impressed me most about this couple was when I told them about my 13 year old daughter being diagnosed with Celiac, they just could not give me enough information on where to shop and what to buy.

They do not have access to the internet and it did not dawn on me to ask how they got their information but they knew alot and seemed so happy to be able to help someone. I wonder how long it took them to find all this information out.

Even though I knew most of what they were telling me, I wish I had more time to talk to them, if not for me but to let them share their knowledge with me because I think they felt good being able to share what they know.

We are lucky to have the internet with all this information at our fingertips and to be able to share what we know with others. I for one need all the help I can get!!! Wink

HI Cynmis,

The sad part about this is that much has not changed in the medical community where CD or GS is concerned. People are still given mis-information and mis-diagnosed. Particularly with the Gluten Sensitive issues. My problem with the medical field is that they are not open to the idea or even suggest as GF diet as a possibility. So in the long run - patients suffer.

So thanks for coming here and helping out!!! One way or another - the word will get out!

Hi everyone,
Entering 6 months since diagnosed... what a struggle, but thanks for this website (Celiac Forums) I think I would be totally miserable.
I have worked with downloaded food lists and other suggested GS food retailers.

Not being a baker at heart, bread was a "big deal", a decent piece of toast please!!! All the GS baked goods at the stores were dry, tastless etc. I found Kinnikinnick Foods in Canada and now order all my bread from them. Sure it is expensive but worth it.

Another thing, I have learned from this site that the more GS food you eat the more sensitive you become to Gluten. Yes, the Holidays taught me that. Thought I was very careful and eating gluten free, but I think a piece of provolone cheese set me off, it happened twice before i realized it. Needless to say it is time to stop experimenting with different foods and stay with the basics.

A positive note is that I am feeling better, less arthritis pain in my body and feet, sleeping much better, less medication, joined a health club and exercising, walking, arobics, weights, swimming, etc.

I'm 70 now going for another 20-plus years - the Lord willing.

Barbara

BY THE WAY!!!! WHERE ARE ALL THE OTHER SENIORS AROUND HERE???

Barb....
You Rock!!!

I was just wondering about you. I saw one of your eariler post and wondered how you were doing. I am so happy for you!! Keep up to good work!! Now...I need to get off my lazy behind and do the same thing.

I think you are Senior way ahead of her time LOL!! I'm not sure that makes any sense...but you know what I mean Very Happy

As far as the cheese...it may be dairy (or casein) you might be reacting to. Does other dairy do that to you?

GEE THANKS FOR THE PRAISE - Really wasn't looking for any, but thanks anyway, "feels good"..

Was it the provolone cheese? - I've been so careful with the diet and figured I'd eat meat and cheese rollups instead of a sandwich. (Christmas Eve)...

I drink a lot of milk, and average of a gallon a week by myself. You see I live alone with my puppy (Bishon), and he is lactose intollerant. Do not seem to have a problem, I've made corn chowder loaded with cream and milk - no problem yet. Well enough of that for now.... sorry about my absence on this site; been busy doing volunteer work and working on this diet, etc. Life is great... (if you keep a positive attitude).

Don't know where you live but today we had a spell of 6" of snow, then sleet and rain... my exercise today was shoveling, snowblowing and shoveling some more.

Thanks for being there, this is "THE" site for celiac... and you are a great, attentive monitor, and a wonderful source of support to all.

Thank you, thank you

Wink Barbara

Barb,

You may not have been looking for praise, but you deserve it!! You and everyone else that has worked hard to make their lives happy & healthy as they can. I tell you...for every one of you...I bet there are dozens/hundreds/thousands more that continue on their same path of self destruction. What I can't figure out, is how they can go thru life feeling sick all the time Shocked . Particularly when they themselves hold the key to their future. Is it easy - Heck NO. But nothing worth while in this life is. (now I sound like my father-in-law Very Happy)

Hmmm then it may not have been the cheese. Most cheese is GF (except some bleu cheeses due to the mold that maybe grown on...BREAD...ewwww. I'm glad I never liked bleu cheese in the 1st place Smile) Maybe the meat??

Yup PMA is key (PMA = Positve Mental Attitude). I know mine was altered after going thru this.

I'm in WI, we had about 7" by us.

As far as this being THE celiac site...I don't know...I will say it is A celiac site. There are so many out there that cover so much more info. FWIW...I'm just a regular poster like you. Nothing more...nothing less. I have no connection to this place other than I like hanging out here. It seemed like a nice quite place to sit and help folks like you. Thanks for your kinds words as well. I just want to help. I just want to save someone from going thru what I went thru (which was not much compared to most, let me tell ya)

Take care and keep us updated on how you're doing. That is of course if you're not hanging out with "Ahhnold" pumping up at the gym. LOL!!!

Oh yeah...you're welcome Wink

WELL!!!
As far as THE celiac site goes... I haven't yet found one that provides the day-to-day information that yours provides. Sure you can find professional sites but one cannot communicate the way this site does. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

PLEASE, please, please don't ever give up this ship... we all need someone like you to carry the ball. Besides you said you like it anyway, right?? Razz

Hi! I am so amazed to find this place. I was diognosed with celiac disease in 1980. I was dismissed from the Dr.'s care and told about the Gf diet. I would just have to try different things and see what I could tolerate. I have done this over the years. I didn't have any severe reactions, so I really was amiss in what I ate. I have had many different physical problems over the years, but did not associate them with celiac, until recently. I have been putting this all together. I have osteoarthritis in my hands, neck, shoulders, spine & hips. I had hip replacement Last April. I have begun having the pain in my gut. I have had anxiety attacks. Also, excema. I was on vioxx, then mobic, then celebrex. Now I am hearing that those drugs inhibit the healing of the small intestines. I'm 66 yrs. old. I'm open to any information which will help me to get on the mend. I have taken myself off the anti-inflamatories.
I look forward to learning all I can on up-dated info. about celiac disease.[/b]

Hi - I'm Barbara, too, but the other 70 year old beat me to the name, so I adopted my full name of Barbara June, which I never use. It seems all the people I know named Barbara are of my generation. Except one. I was a labor and delivery nurse for many years, and about 10 years ago I took care of a patient who liked me so much that she named her baby daughter after me! Then I retired!

My 4 kids got me this computer for Christmas. I'm having a ball with it! When I have time. I plan to take a class with an instructor who never says "We just went over that, Mom".

Yes, the internet is a good source of info on CD, but remember that you have to figure it out for yourself. I think that joining a support group is a good way to go, too. Members really are supportive, you realize that you aren't the only one with this crazy diagnosis, and you can join in a common effort to help educate physicians, dieticians, restauranteurs and the general public about the disease.

I was diagnosed in 1999 and I'm amazed at the increasing publicity CD has been getting just since then. CSA/USA publishes a Consumer Products Listing with lists of gf foods you can buy. It was a tremendous help to me when I first was diagnosed. Not so much any more. The new labeling law is going to help us a lot. Others with CD are a tremendous source of knowledge, but what works for one person won't always work for another. You have to try things for yourselves.

Al, you know alot about what works and what doesn't. You've had a lot of experience with this diet and you mus tbe a big help to others on this forum. I'm originally from WI, visit there frequently, but don't envy you the snow. It's over 60 F here in So Cal, and believe it or not, I'm cold!

Later, BJ
