I earned a $250 gift certificate through my business last year (ironically, I am a Pampered Chef consultant & make a living through cooking NON-gf most the time for others!). I'm considering a grain mill through Amazon.com. I'm wondering if it really is a huge savings. I can get bean flour & rice flour through international stores locally much cheaper than HFS (the cheapest I've found is rice flour for $.59 & then others are more). But, I wonder how much I'd save with doing my own. What flours would I still need to purchase? Tapioca & Potato, I assume. But, I could grind wild rice & other things not available as flours normally.

Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks!

Lori

Lori - what kind are you considering? Back in my wheat grinding days, I had both a back to basics hand gringer and an electric Grain Master Whisper Mill. The grain master was very quiet as far as grinders go, and got the flour really fine. It worked great. I have seen other people's grinders in action and it is like standing inside of a 747 engine. The noise level and how fine you can get the grain are of equal importance to me as is saving $ buying flour.

I can't speak to the money savings because I haven't run the numbers But I am thinking of getting another grinder, and it will probably be another Whisper Mill.

Colleen, you can't get another Whisper Mill..........they went out of business, but they sold the patent and they are now Wonder Mills.

My husband just bought me one for Christmas $219. I found it through Ebay New........the shipping was free.

I have made brown rice flour, white rice, sweet rice and some bean flours. they all grind very fine.

I am happy with the purchase.

benaphlag, I still purchase my tapioca and potato startch at the Asian market for cheaper than at the health food store. Here at the Publix grocery store, they sometimes sell Rice for boy one get one free. Last week I bought 25 pounds of sweet rice in the Asian store for $14. That is much cheaper than $2.89 per bag of less than 2 pounds of pre-milled sweet rice flour.

If you do lots of baking, I think that you would save the price of the grinder. (I mill the rice or beans for my house and for my daughter's house.)

Hope I didnt' just post this as a new topic! Got finger happy! LOL!

Thanks for the input. I'll consider it more. I have heard the Wonder mill (formerly Whisper mill) is the one to get for noise & for a really fine grind. Though, I've gained even more weight on the diet (I was SO thin for years, then as I got close to 40 I got heavier & now on the diet I'm growing exponentially!). I was gaining without processing my food---good grief! Not sure that I need to be making anything with rice flour or other starches in it!

I have some time to think about it, so I'll keep checking into it.
