I understand if you carry the genes you have celiac. But what if your genes don't have the DQ genes can you still be gluten sensitive ? Just curious. Carey

Carey,

I'll give it a go Very Happy .

GENETIC FACTORS FOR CD:

(Taken from a handout by guest speaker DR. Steven J. Squillace, MD, SMDC in a recent celiac support meeting I attended in Duluth, Minnesota)

Strongly associated with HLA-DQ2 and HLA- DQ8 Haplotypes.

97% of patients with celiac disease have one of these haplotypes as compared to 40% of the general population.

An individual who tests negative for either one of these haplotypes is unlikely to have Celiac Disease.(Only .5% of celiac patients are negative for both).

Only 3% of individuals with HLA DQ2 will develop Celiac disease.

Based on the above information; I would say it is not only possible to be gluten sensitive, but there is a small chance you can also have celiac disease. This is just my interpretation of the genetic factors the doctor listed? What do you think? Keep in mind I'm a security guard not a doctor. I could be missing something here Very Happy .

Jim

Jim - Great job on the genetic stuff!! A tip of my hat to you!! I have never spent a lot of time figuring out all the genetic stuff. Embarassed

Carey - I don't really know the answer to that. I do know that some in the medical community recognize the DQ1 gene as being assoc. with Gluten Sensitivity (not celiac).

I would venture to guess that you could be sensitive to gluten w/o the genes. I have no scientific proof or studies - it's just my opinion.
