Not available in PA yet either. Hope soon, as my distributor (PA still has antiquated laws about where you can buy beer) is trying to work with them to get them licensed here.

Are the other beers noted licensed in PA?

Hmm, now that I've finally figured out what's wrong with me the whole "healthy lifestyle" thing is going out the window and I've gotta figure out what might be okay at a bar. My friends keep on bugging me to go out with them and now that I'm not dead after 10 it would be nice to have some fun.

I doubt you will find this stuff at the bar. I would go and ask if they would carry it for you!!

Yeah, I'm in a college town so there's enough bars that noone's gonna want to go the same place all the time . Laughing Is there something "normal" with a low alcohol content that doesn't taste too nasty? It looks like the other options are all hard liquer.

I certainly would try a larger liquor store to see if they'd try to get a hold of some of it. That's what i did for the New Grist. They already carried some of the NGF Beer from the same brewer. They said they'd check into....about 1 or 2 months later...I got a call stating my New Grist was in. They go thru about 5-7 cases of it (No, it's not all going to me!! LOL). I told them it'd be worth their while to stock this.

Bards is supposed to be available again in May sometime. They had some brewing problems and have since switched brewers. Bards is my favorite.

So can you carry a bottle of this stuff into any bar and explain that you're allergic to barley and they're okay with it? Because it's purely for social reasons, not because I actually have any interest in drinking it with any frequency or quantity. That's why I was asking about other stuff, like some mixed drink that's generally safe.

According to their web site, Bard's Tale is being produced at a brewery in Californai now and their production capacity will increase by 1200%. That should make some big changes in where they're available.

Hi, cultureslayer. Is it true, (I think I read it in the CDF newsletter here in So. California(?)) that all distilled drinks are okay, even if the original ingredient would have had gluten? I think they were talking about scotch or bourbon or something where it's actually made out of malt or something, but in the distilling process no gluten could come thru -- but don't take my word for it, I don't really remember except that I was surprised.

But check because then you could always have scotch & soda, or rum & coke, or vodka & 7-up, or whatever, and just drink one plain 7-up for every one with alcohol, and it's gluten-free. Also some vodkas must still be made from potatoes, I know, because they are kosher for passover.

And of course there's always wine, that's always fun.javascript:emoticon('Smile')

Yup distilled items are safe even if they are from gluten bearing grains.

Here's some info on distilled items: http://www.celiacforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1391

Hmm... good news, and bad news for me; I can drink distilled booze, but it doesn't look like *any* of the gluten-free beers are available on the west coast at all. I'm going to go by the Big Booze Store (BevMo?) in San Jose later this week, and ask, but I'm not keeping my hopes up too much.

On the other hand, I have found several gluten-free homebrewing recipies. I once had a housemate who homebrewed... and now, I'm so very tempted to take up the hobby...

I was on vacation in San Diego a couple of weeks ago and found Ramapo Valley Brewery Passover Honey Beer in a Whole Foods Market.

My first reaction on trying it was "Wow, it tastes like real beer!" I think because the first thing tasted was the hops (which is certainly missing in Woodchuck draft cider, my GF substitute). Then the taste of the honey kicked in. It was a bit strange. Not sweet (I assume the sugar had been fermented and was mostly gone) but with a definite taste (or aftertaste). All in all I'd give it a C+ or B-. I'm still hoping that Bard's Tale or New Grist make it to Tucson.

Hey elynne - good news for us west-coasters! I spoke with the owner of Lingonberries Market yesterday and he said that they're going to start carrying a GF beer by August! Yea! Very Happy I'm so happy I could cry. I really miss the occasional cold beer on a hot day. I'm not sure which brand but I'll definately post here with my beer review when the time comes... Cool Woo! Woo! (I can only dream it might be a dark beer...)

Culture Slayer, if your out at a pub try hard cider. Most places carry at least one kind and it's more "beer-like" than mixed drinks.

Oooh - thank you, Jenn. I never did manage to get to a BevMo while down in CA; Vancouver is a bit of a drive away from Seattle, but it's closer than San Francisco! Razz
