First of all let me say, that since my daughter went GF 2 months ago, she has lost alot of her weight(bloatness). She was just swelling up and I was told she was overweight, now she looks and feels much better. She no longer gets that stabbing and poking stick feeling in her tummy everyday. What a positive change and she has accepted her GF diet without any problems,I think because she feels sooooo much better and she knows if she eats it the pain will come.
My new question is has anyone ever been told that immune system problems are linked to CD. She was dx back 2002 with an immune defiecncey and now I have heard that CD can cause that, too. I was wondering if anyone else has an immune problem and have been told that CD is the cause of that,too. Thank you for your help and support.

I have Primary Immune Defiency and now suspect CD. Does your daughter have PID or something else? If it is PID, you can go to www.primaryimmune.org and maybe get some help from their forum. I do not know if the two are related.

| thank you for all your information. I am having her vitamin k checked, as the thread Al suggested, was really helpful. It sure seems like that could be the problem. Hopefully it is that, rather than something more serious. She goes for blood work Friday afternoon. I will let you know, thank you so much. |

| I just took my son to University of Chicago celiac disease program, to get confirmation of his celiac diagnosis. He also has an autoimmune connective tissue disease, dermatomyositis. I asked the doctor at UofC if one causes the other, or what the connection is, and he said they really do not know, but that there is a frequency of celiac disease with autoimmune disorders. |

ABSTRACT
We report two children with inflammatory myopathy who were found to have celiac disease:, a 10 year old female with dermatomyositis and an 8 year old female with polymyositis. The association between inflammatory myopathy and celiac disease has been reported in adults, but is not well recognized in children. Celiac disease is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in patients of all ages, and we believe that the possibility of celiac disease must be considered in children presenting with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy even in the absence of significant gastrointestinal complaints.

Dermatomyositis
Dermatomyositis is a disorder mainly of the skin, muscle
and blood vessels in which characteristic erythematous
and edematous changes in the skin are associated with
muscle weakness and inflammation. An underlying
carcinoma is commonly described in adults. Juvenile
dermatomyositis (JDM) has a more favorable prognosis
for life but functional disability is usually severe. Its
pathogenesis is probably due to cell-mediated immunity to
muscle antigens, humoral immunity and immune complex
deposition[118].
Some authors have described an association with
CD[119-122]. Both diseases have a strong association with
DQA1 0501 heterodimer because a linkage disequilibrium
with HLA-DR3 haplotype or alternatively DR5/DR7
heterozygosity in CD[123,124] DQA1 0501 may lead to the
activation of CD4-positive T cells by presentation of a still
unidentifi ed peptide that may induce CD or JDM. Evron
et al[125] and Marie et al[121] have also described the
association between dermatomyositis (DM) and
polymyositis (PM) and CD in adults. For these authors CD
may be included within the spectrum of gastrointestinal
manifestations of DM/PM and they showed that GFD
may resolve clinical and laboratory abnormalities.
