Cutaneous (Skin) manifestations in celiac disease (2006)
World J Gastroenterol 2006 February 14; 12(6): 843-852

Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune gluten-dependent
enteropathy characterized by atrophy of intestinal
villi that improves after gluten-free diet (GFD). CD is
often associated with extra-intestinal manifestations;
among them, several skin diseases are described in CD
patients. The present review reports all CD-associated
skin manifestations described in the literature and tries
to analyze the possible mechanisms involved in this
association. The opportunity to evaluate the possible
presence of CD in patients affected by skin disorders is
discussed. _________________ Al

Amazing - maybe this explains the ugly eczema and blistering rash I dealt with from the age of 8 until it gradually diminished and went away at about 14; about the same time my low thyroid, which turned out to be Hashimoto's, began to be treated. Funny how these autoimmune things are all connected. I guess they didn't know to test for CD in a patient who presented with skin problems 50 years ago.
Even funnier, back then, one of my mother's friends told her I might be allergic to wheat, so she promptly forbade all my favorite cereals, along with chocolate and anything else she happened to read or hear about - she was desperate to find a cause. Of course, I continued to eat barley, rye and oats, so nothing much changed. By the time I was in college, the rash had gone away and I was eating whatever I wanted, which continued until about a month ago _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |
