Just received this. At least they are honest, but at the same time it does annoy me.
"Guest Relations <Guest.Relations@jackinthebox.com> to me
Dear Lauren,
Thank you for your e-mail. Unfortunately we do not have a list of products
that might be considered safe for guests with Celiac Disease. We strongly
recommend that people with food sensitivities such as Celiac's consider not eating at our restaurants, as we can not guarantee that product for your order will not come in contact with products that could cause you a
reaction. We do have a separate fryer for French Fries; however, again, we can not guarantee that when the restaurant is busy, that fryer will never be used for breaded products also. Please don't hesitate to contact our Guest Relations Department at 1-800-955-5225, option 1, if you have
additional questions or comments. Our representatives are available Monday through Friday, 6am to 6pm PST.
Sincerely,
Jessica

Yeah, at least it was an honest response, and now you know. I understand about them becoming busy and using the fryer for other things. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Maybe we should start all requests for information with did you know that it is estimated that 1/133 people has CD. In the US that's 2,243,941 people, in the World its 49,061,430. What company in their right mind would choose to ignore that many people? Are there more illegal aliens than people with CD in the US? Maybe we need to have a protest, stay home from work, boycott all non-CD friendly vendors and prove our point. Better yet I think we need to take over the country, throw out all people who don't have CD or agree to live 100% CD and invite all the rest of the 47 million people around the world to come and join us. Oops, maybe we need to go to some country with oil _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

There's not any in NC and I don't normally eat fast food anyway, but I was reading online about some huge fiasco at jack in the box in 1993 after I emailed them so I guess it's just as well. I know that gluten cross contamination might be all that's talked about here, but there's bacteria and other stuff that could be spread the same way. If I can eat food with raw egg (meringue, cookie dough) without a problem but have bacterially induced problems with fast food that's bad. I just never thought about how sloppy that meant it all was until I was diagnosed with CD.
That reminds me, need to find a cookie recipe that doesn't approximate the leavings of a dog with IBS and a sand eating fetish in appearance and texture (or at least what I'd imagine). _________________ Lauren

Yep, I worked at McD's back then and it changed the way fast food restaurants handled their meat. People died from food poisoning from under cooked meat. E-coli I think it was. We had to get digital thermometers and check the internal temperature of all the meat and were not allowed to serve anything that was not well done. I notice restaurants are slacking off again but for a number of years afterwards you couldn't got to any Restaurant and order a burger that wasn't well done because the meat was ground and it had to be cooked all the way through to kill any bacteria that might have been on the outside and got inside during the grinding process. Yuck! _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

I'm sorry, but if 1/133 people have CD, then 1 person has CD and 132 people are "normal". Since businesses are just out to make money, it makes sense to cater to the largest number of people. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Yes but that One collectively in the US is over 2 million people. If every person goes out to dinner even once a week and pays $10.00 or more thats a lot of profit someone is ignoring. (Wal-mart figured it out and they are supposed to be the King of beat out the little guy and rule the world.) Personally I know that we would eat out probably 7 times a week (at least) if there was more than two places in town that I could eat at. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

While 1 in 133 people may have Celiac Disease, only 1 in about 4700 is actually diagnosed. This is the reason that more businesses aren't willing/eager/interested in providing safe gluten free meals. This is the same reason that GF based businesses like Happy (Happy) Bakery in the NY area have to close.
