Hi All,
Traveling to Las Vegas and San Francisco (Union Square area) from Ireland this September. And will be staying in hotels in both destinations can any one recommend resturants (Expensive or Cheap) that i eat out at. I know about the Wholefoods supermarkets for other foods during the day but is there any other health food shops in these areas that also cater for coeliacs????
Many thanks
Smile Ail

Hi Ail,

Welcome to the board!!

I'm still looking around for you. One option - there is a contact person for the Las Vegas CD support group. Email them and ask for suggestions Smile. They would know the local places. http://www.celiac.org/newsEvents/ev-0604-las-vegas.php

If I find more...I'll post back.

Hope you have a great trip!!

My son lives in Las Vegas so I visit there often to visit him and our daughter-in-law. We do stay in hotels also. Smith's Markets in Vegas are part of the Kroger grocery store chain so the 800 number and dietician are available to a visitor. One caution is that you must call during regular business hours.
I found the assistant manager of the Buffet at Treasure Island extremely helpful and the chefs very cooperative. I took bread with me to breakfast for instance, and they were very understanding. I actually had no problems at any of the restaurants we enjoy.
On Mother's Day we had brunch at the J.W. Marriott Resort and Gustav and his staff were very knowledgeable about celiac disease.

Hi ail! Smile

I can't tell you specifically about gluten-free places in SF, but I *can* tell you that the whole city is actually very small. I've walked from Embarcadero Square to the Golden Gate bridge; it was a long hike, but that's the entire width of the city, and it took me... oh, maybe an hour and a half. While in SF, do *not* expect to drive; the streets are incredibly complicated and extremely hilly, and there's approximately 10 free parking spaces in the entire city at any given time. On the other hand, you should be able to get anywhere you need to go by MUNI (the electric tram), BART (the monorail system for the entire Bay Area), or the SF bus system.

ail -

There is a restaurant in San Francisco called Cafe Maritimes that I read about that supposedly knows about gluten-free cooking. You might want to look it up.

There is also Rockridge Cafe, 5492 College Ave, Oakland, CA. phone:510-653-1567. I went there with friends for special pancakes that had gluten, and I breakfasted nicely on a basil omelette. Oakland is not far from San Francisco, so depending on where you are and how you're getting around, you might want to try it.

Since you are coming from another country, you'll want to know that both McDonalds and In 'n' Out Burger have protein burgers, at Mc Donalds they are called lettuce wraps, at In 'n' Out they are protein burgers. French Fries at these two places are also safe, and at In 'n' Out the shakes are safe.

Don't hesitate to explain to you waiter that you are on a gluten-free diet, and can't have anything with wheat or flour in it. Be very specific, like asking them to please leave the crutons off the salad. Most salad dressings are safe. I never eat soup in restaurants, there is just too much chance that there's something in it I can't eat. Also, remember that many restaurants marinate the meat before it is served, ask!

There are lots of good places for us to eat! Enjoy your visit!

Il Fornia restaurant has gf pasta
PF Changs has gf menu
Z Tejas has gf menu
Bahama Breeze used to have menu, will work well with you
Maggianos in the Fashion Show Mall has gf pasta
Wolfgangs Puck has gf menu
Mon Ami Gabi in the Paris hotel will flag your order with yellow tag
The Bellagio hotel where I just stayed said that all of their restaurants will accomodate you.
Joe's Stone Crab and Steakhouse gave me a lovely meal with a 5 pound baked potato as my entree!
DO NOT try to eat at the casual restaurant in the Las Vegas Hilton. They wouldn't serve me and were not co-operative at all!
Stay away from the buffets as they are ripe for cross contamination. Remember a hard boiled egg and half a grapefruit is a VERY safe breakfast.
Have fun!!!!

It's 7 sq. miles to be exact. Very Happy

Also if you mind your P's and Q's you should do okay. Try to order safe and eat at places that are reputed to be GF friendly. If they aren't accommodating up front don't worry about getting up and walking out to eat somewhere else.

I took a 3 week road trip a few years ago from Portland down though SF to LA over to Vegas, hit the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce National Parks then up through Utah, Salt Lake, Salt Flats and back to Portland. I got sick a total of one time (in LA). On rice of all things. I think it was a cross contamination issue.

Bring some snacks, shop at the grocery stores you've got noted and have fun!

PS: I lived in SF for 10 years pre-dx and so can recommend some really great restaurants - but I don't know how GF they are...

I do remember eating successfully at "Chow" on Church St. x Market during my trip.

For a great Vietnamese California fusion check out: The Slanted Door located in the old Ferry Building at Market St. x Embarcadero has excellent food - again not sure how GF they are. Might have some soy sauce issues - but they make everything fresh and so could probably work with you to eliminate offending ingredients. I'd call ahead of time on this one.

There are others, but I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for so I'll stop here.

7 square miles? Wow... of course, that doesn't count the *volume* of all those hills... Laughing

Hi, All -

We live in the DC area, but travel at least once a year to Las Vegas, where my stepfather lives. We recently joined the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant club (at least, got the little frequent diner card) at a wonderful local place (in the Tyson's Corner Galleria, for anyone nearby). ALL of their restaurants have gluten free menus. Their listings included Mon Ami Gabi, which is a lovely restaurant right on the Las Vegas strip, right under the Eiffel tower at the Paris, Las Vegas property! For a special treat, try to get seated out on the patio for dinner, so you can catch the Bellagio fountain shows while you eat. Smile

Enjoy your trip!

Elizabeth

Definitely try Cafe Gratitude http://www.cafegratitude.com/ and safe money for desert! I live 15 min north of SF. You can not beat the deserts at this place. There is no PF Changs in San Francisco itself but one across the Golden Gate bridge in Marin County (Corte Madera) and one across the Oakland / San Francisco Bay Bridge in Emeryville in a nice area www.pfchangs.com.

In San Francisco, there is the San Francisco Soup Co which has GF menus and soups. Plus there are a number in SF so they are an easy lunch find. http://www.sfsoupco.com/.

There are no Outbacks in San Francisco either and they have a GF menu of course. But there is one in Marin County on your way to Sauslito and Muir Woods two must sees.

Sausalito (Golden Gate)
(415) 331-6193
196 Donahue Street, Sausalito CA 94965
Proprietor: Matt Wohl

Monday: 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Tuesday: 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Wednesday: 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Thursday: 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Friday: 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Saturday: 3:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Sunday: 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM

North or South on 101 freeway, take Sausalito/Marin City exit. Outback is located in Gateway Center next to Ross.

Also, you can go for an American burger at In-n-Out Burger at Fisherman's Wharf. But you must be clear that they make your burger on the clean grill and make sure that hands, cooking utensils etc be clean. Usually they are very accomodating but you have to make sure they hear you and understand you clearly so there is no risk of cross contamination.

http://www.in-n-out.com

If you go to a nice fish restaraunt, they usually can make fish dishes gf with little effort. I would call a head if you can.
