Hello All,
Pre-GF life I participated in a cooking forum where new and interesting recipes were always turning up. In order to manage the recipes a system was put in place for recipes to be deemed "Tried and True" aka TNT. After 3 participants tested the recipe(following the directions exactly as written with no substitutions) and thought that it was fabulous, mouth watering, delicious, etc.** the recipe would then be transferred to a 'Tried and True" folder where all excellent recipes lived for internet eternity. Any recipe (original or not, most often not) could become a TNT recipe. Many of my favorite recipes I found as results of my many searches in that folder or discussions leading up to TNT status.
Lately, I've really been missing the TNT folder of recipes in my life. I was wondering if there is interest in starting a TNT file/folder here and if it is possible to add a dedicated TNT folder to those already in place.
Seems like those double chocolate mint chip cookies could be a likely candidate for TNT status if there is some interest.
**Not everyone always got the same outcome because of some variable including weather, location and different styles of meausuring, etc.

Jim,
What kind of recipes are you 'needing'? Maybe I/we can help you out?

This sounds like a good idea to me too. It is always nicer to make or buy something that someone has already used and found to work for them then to just wing it. Of course, people have different tastes. My husband hates texture in his foods, casseroles are out. I am just the opposite, if it is served seperately, I will often mix it together on my plate. What about a rating system and the ability to post the tips of those who had tried to make it, like some recipe sites I have visited? _________________ Connie

Yes, you're right about differing tastes. I should have included that as well and will edit my original post to include that. Differing brands of AP flour generally have the same texture, gluten content, protein, etc. We all know that BRM Brown Rice Flour has a different texture than Arrowhead Mills or any other manufacturer. So you might have a different outcome because you use a different brand of flour than I do. Going into this we'll just have to know that the recipe was better than acceptable for the people who tried it, but can't guarantee that it will be acceptable for everyone.
In the cooking forum, the recipe and the subsequent discussion was moved to the Tried and True folder after it was nominated for TNT status. The benefit of the discussion being moved was to see how people with similar tastes liked it, possible substitutions, techniques, etc.
I'm not sure how a rating system would work. We could both look at the sky through the same window and you would might think it's blue and I might think it's gray. It's something to think about though.

I think a TNT folder sounds like a great idea. It is always good to try new things. My family must feel like guinea pigs most of the time, since I like to try new recipes so much. _________________ -Colleen

Sounds like a great idea to me too. I know the star system they use at recipezaar.com makes a big difference to me. I usually won't try anything that doesn't have comments and a rating. Not everyone needs to agree that a recipe is TNT, but a preponderance should be enough. This forum should be better than "Zaar", because we can discuss why something may not have turned out. _________________ The Merry SillyYak |

I'm glad you resurrected this thread! As we try different recipes posted on the site, let's remember to go back and add our comments, critiques, suggestions for change, etc. At that point we can deal with TNT designation or implementation of a star system.
Do you ever use the recipe at epicurious.com? Same concept as 'zaar with the ratings and comments, but the recipes generally come Gourmet, Bon Appetite, etc. I get alot to most of my recipe from that epicurious.com

I looked through the gluten free listings they had at epicurious.com and most of them wouldn't work for me. My husband and I are adventurous, but I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old who aren't. They are still at the stage of not eating anything that has too many colors, smells different or has mixed textures. I hate making two meals so I need to hold off on the more interesting dishes until they are more cooperative. Thanks for letting me know about the site. We do try to slip recipes like those in every couple of weeks to see how it goes and to expose the kids to new things. Looks like a great recipe site for dishes to impress guests. Al,
Is there anyway that we can get another thread under cooking to house tried and true recipes? If so, is it possible to move threads to a different folder? Can either of these things be done by you or does Admin have to be involved?

I can move thread to different "folders" (aka forums).
I can not create new "folders" [forums]. That is something Admin must do. You want it in the Cooking & Recipe Section, right? The same place where the regular Recipe, Mfg & Products, Cooking Tips Forums lives. _________________ Al

Yes, I think the Cooking and Recipe section would be great if it's possible to add another folder.
Thanks Al!

I know you mentioned voting or ranking these somehow...in order for them to be put in the TnT forum...
What type of description do you want used to explain or describe [the how's & why's recipes get posted there] the TnT forum?
If we dont make it clear - just "ordinary" recipes will be put there. _________________ Al

Al,
I think we have to further discuss the 'guidelines' for placing recipes in a TNT folder.
For the time being is it possible that only you as a moderator can move/place recipes in that folder after they've been deemed TNT by the community?
