You see that? That right there?
I think that's gonna be our new house!
I'm sooooo excited! We have the initial meeting with the builders this afternoon, then we get to go design the interior and pick out a lot, then they start building.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Very nice!!!
We just celebrated our 1st anniversary in our home. Granted, it wasn't built for us... but, it was the house that just screamed "buy me" while we were looking. Up until that time, we had 2 kids in a two bedroom apartment. It was a nightmare. As soon as we learned we were expecting our third.... we started the hunt.
You'll love getting into "a space of your own" after having lived in an apartment. It's a gorgeous plan... best wishes to you! |

Nice. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Upstairs W/D is great for when you are dead tired but forgot that you didn't have any clean undies
My parents built a kind of similar plan kitchen wise. If you cook messy you might want to think about adding a bar or half wall between the kitchen and the nook/great room to make it a little bit harder to see the messy kitchen . Can give you more countertop/storage space too, since you'll be cooking more than the average person these plans are designed for (my father is a general contractor, so they did a lot of things the first time that people do in a remodel). Much cheaper to add it now than decide later that you need more counter/storage. Things that are cheaper to change later are flooring (IF you move all the furniture out yourself, that lowers the cost). My parents got carpet and vinyl with tile in the kitchen when we were younger and planned on adding wood when that wore out until they had to move.
Other thing was an oversized garage for tools and toys, but most people just use them for storage anyway so I doubt you'd need that.
A door on the side of the garage *keyed seperately* will allow you to go on vacation, lock down the garage door, give a pet sitter or MIL keys to get in if you keep the garage/house door unlocked, but once you get back you don't have to worry about them getting in the house and buying a single lock and deadbolt set is only about $20 (less than re-keying, and once you get several you can rotate and I doubt anyone would figure it out). But then my parents like privacy, so the idea of a pet sitter/house cleaner/whoever having access to the house at any time might not be a big deal to you. _________________ Lauren

Thanks everybody for the well wishes! We scheduled a meeting for next weekend to go to their design studio and pick out all the "extra" stuff.
And thanks for all the tips slayer! Unfortunetly any extra walls/islands/etc we're going to have to do ourselves. This plan doesn't allow for stuff like that, at least not in the kitchen. But it's definetly something to keep in mind.
It's just the two of us right now in our apartment, but we're already feeling pretty crowded. The last time I lived in a house was when I lived with my parents! It's gonna be great.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Congrats, have fun. We are building a retirement home in Kentucky, slowly, very slowly, in 1-2 wk intervals 3-4 times a year. Just got to paint last time, get to pick out cabinets soon. We put the washer/dryer upstairs as well as that's where our bedroom is. Don't know how it will work out, no electricity yet but we'll see. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Hehehe, good luck with that Kathie! I understand the slow part. Once we pick out a lot and sign the papers they just dig a big hole in the ground and let it sit over winter. I don't do "slow" very well....I'll have to keep myself calm while it just sits there.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
