I recently read how much gluten is cross contaminated when the companies are harvesting oats for quaker oatmeal.
So I got scared.
But I still have a box of Oatios in my cabinate. It says "Wheat Free".
"Certified Organic". I bought it at the health food store and the guy who owns the place and reccomended them is gluten free himself.
Ingredients are listed as Organic whole oat flour, Organic brown rice flour, Organic evaporated cane juice, Organic oat bran, sea salt, Natural Vitamin E (to preserve freshness).
Do you think it's safe to eat??? _________________ Is ferret meat gluten-free? |

Some celiacs think it not OK to eat oats probably because of the cross contamination problem. I do eat oats but go for the McCann's Irish oatmeal because they only produce oatmeal...or so I've been led to believe. You can never be 100% sure. Cereals marked wheat free usually are not gluten free but it's because of the oats added. I eat oatmeal about twice a month and my most recent bloodwork came out perfect. Very low numbers so what I've been doing has worked for me.
How sensitive are you? I've read in a number of articles that most doctors think that oats are safe for about 98% of celiacs but it's such a personal thing. The only way for you to know is to eat some and see how you feel afterwards. There is no gluten in the ingredients listed but what is the source of the oats and oat bran? |

Exactly what I'm wondering!!! I called them and had to leave a message. Hopefully we'll find out! _________________ Is ferret meat gluten-free? |

Actually we don't eat oats because up until very recently it was believed that Oats was one of the BIG 4 for celiacs, WRBO (actually they used to list them as Wheat, oats, rye and barley, in that order). I think the jury is still out on whether the issue is cross contamination in the fields or processing plants or oats itself. I believe there are studies going on to try and determine whether they are truly safe or not. (I'm sure one of the fact people will pop in with the link, we've talked about this before or more info) When I was diagnosed we were told we couldn't eat Buckwheat, now we know that it is perfectly fine the only relationship to wheat is in the name. Its one of those grey areas, some say its ok and others are still waiting for more research results. I would definetly stay away from things like Quaker Oats, which are notorious for cross-cont. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88

I stay far, far away from oats. I've gotten sick for days off one Cheerio. But I think that's just me; it depends on how sensitive you are. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

| Oh, I don't eat anything like Cheerios or with refined oats in it....just plain, course ground oatmeal. As my blood work came back great, it's proven to me that oats are not a problem, at least for me. I have also read that the gluten in oatmeal is not the same gluten as that in the other 3 grains...this is based on eastern teachings. Most of what I've read leans towards oatmeal being fine but again, people are different and some may not feel comfortable ingesting them or just get plain sick from them. I would rely on what your bloodwork tells you as far as the diet is concerned....if you are eating gluten, your immune system will respond and then you'll know it's not a good idea. |

Besides the processed oats, you're probably getting sick from the wheat starch that's in the plain version... there's wheat flour in the Honey Nut one (my personal x-favorite cereal - boohoo)... _________________ Cheers!

Honey nut cheero's used to be one of my favorites also . I called Quaker a week or two ago about the gf status of their rice cakes and was told they don't consider anything they produce gf other then there syurp(can't recall which one) due to cross contamination. I also recall reading studies of celiacs eating oatmeal, not just the stuff from coop and still having good blood work. These studies were either from Al's posts or CSA I think? I haven't touched oats myself yet, but miss them.

It's any oats, including oatmeal. I just avoid it altogether. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Well, I'm thinking concerning the Oatios that since they say "wheat free" on the box, they mean wheat free. So i opened the box and was unable to control myself. (I ate the whole box in 2 days!) ROFL
I've not had any side effects...yet. LOL
I have stopped eating oats unless it's made in a wheat free product like Oatios. I figure if I get sick off of it, I can hire a lawyer to sue them, since it DOES say "wheat free". LOL!
I think a few of the new morning cereals from the health food store actually DO say "Gluten Free" on the lable. The rice crispies come to mind....
thanks for the opinions. I love ya'll! You make me feel normal just be us all having the same problems! (is that weird?) _________________ Is ferret meat gluten-free? |

I'm at least somewhat lucky; I never liked oats. And yes, there are several cereals in Whole Foods (and a few at Trader Joe's) that are wheat *and* gluten-free. I adore Nature's Path honey-sweetened corn flakes, and they're sometimes stocked in large bulk-sized bags. Mmmm, corn flakes. I'd have a bowl now, but we're out of milk in the house. _________________ Striving to be GF since 5/06 (with occasional lapses)

WOW I didn't know that some countries are OK with Oats for coeliacs.
In Australia Coeliacs are told to stay away from Wheat, Rye, Oats, and Barley. _________________ ~*~Sari~*~ |

| Sari - oats are usually not ok for celiacs in the U.S. either...it just depnds on one's sensitivity AND what kind of "oat" product you get. Like her oatios cereal says "wheat free" but NOT gluten free...there still might be gluten in the organic oats...we don't really know. Most dieticians will tell us celiacs to not use oats as they are questionable because of cross contamination issues of where they are grown in fields & where they are milled/processed. There are several kinds of oat/oatmeal products that haven't negatively effected celiacs...like her oatios don't seem to bother her...I've never tried them. However, I have tried McCain's Irish Oatmeal and it hasn't seemed to bother me. Pamela's has some oatmeal rasin (gf/wf) cookies, but I've never been brave enough to try them either. If you are newly diagnosed I wouldn't try it just yet...let your body heal and then if you feel adventurous, go to the health food store & try some. |

GREAT response post, dotk!
When I was diagnosed, my primary care said "from everything you've looked up and everything I've looked up, stay away from wheat, barley rye and spelt."
I hear of alot of celiacs saying "What's wrong with spelt?" I say: It's in the same grain family- I AVOID IT!
LOL!
I only heard about oats when I came here, and MrsP said that she was cutting out corn and oats.
Alot of people on here avoid the following:
Wheat, Barley, Rye, Spelt, Oats, Corn, Casien, dairy, soy.
I have no idea how they eat! LOL! I still eat corn and eggs and dairy and soy. I currently have a box of oatios in my pantry... it's my guilty pleasure. I miss oats so much that I am claiming the "wheat-free" on the box to mean NO WHEAT at all. If I get sick, I can always sue for better labling. LOL!
