It is so funny you said that! He is very intelligent and we all laugh and his controlling ways. Dont get me wrong he is a great husband and father but he is a control freak and we do tease him. I have two so called tested 'gifted kids' and my youngest is showing all the same trates. By two he knows colors, numbers, letters every thomas the tank engine train etc etc. In fact I wont teach him anything as it came as a big problem for my other kids when they hit school. One couldnt fit in as his conversations were too difficult for the other Kindergarteners , he was put up a year when he was in 1st grade and of course his maturity age was not the same as the others. (He was reading Harry Potter in Kindergarten). My daughter had it easier as she went to Montessori schools in Sweden and had two languages to keep her occupied. I know it is a 'special need' too but as someone who is not as well educated you have to be on your toes to keep up with them I have also felt the they do show some autisitc tendancies. How do you cope? |

As a kid I used to HATE the texture of nuts. Absolutely would not eat them if they were big enough to pick out. Couldn't stand when any bits got stuck in my teeth or between the tooth/gum. Didn't know how to explain this as a kid so I said they "prickled my teeth" and everyone would laugh. But that was the difference. I could be picky, but I had to eat what was on the table in some variety. Grew out of it pretty quickly once I hit my teens, but anything with a very oily texture still triggers the gag reflex (and I'm the kind of person that can't seem to vomit no matter what nastiness I eat or how sick I am). No castor oil. no oil based salad dressing, but I'm old enough now that most people just think it's because I'm trying to be healthy. Don't even like fried foods.
I think if he tried some of this stuff with a more open mind he'd realize it wasn't that bad. When I had to start fixing my own food any pickiness soon became a mild preference. _________________ Lauren

I see I'm jumping in a little late but I agree with Mrs P. on the meal issue. My children were raised that they ate what we cooked or went without until the next meal. I always made sure there was at least one thing on the table that everyone would eat. My son ate many a meal of plain rice or plain pasta. He is a very healthy 19 year old. My new family is slightly different I still have to fight with the DH every once in awhile when one of the boys gets finicky (14) about eating the meal, he would tell them to go fix themselves something different, in the beginning he would make multiple meals just as you do. We finally have agreed that they can eat whats prepared or a PBJ. Usually he decides dinner doesn't look to bad after all. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

I agree with Mrs. P as well. We had to clean our plates before we left the table, there was no desert if you didn't finish, there weren't any other dinner choices, etc. Trust me, they'll ditch the picky-ness pretty quick when they realize there's no other options.
Perhaps there's other ways you can prepair the food? For example, for some reason I hate most cooked veggies. But I love them when they're raw. So I just eat more raw veggies.
If it helps, we're also on a one-income budget, and my husband is also working on his master's degree. We try to buy food/cook in bulk, and I'm always looking on Foodnetwork.com for new recipes. We spend about $200-300 per month in groceries. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Ok I have been mulling everything over. It is 2am and I have had an ephiphany (is that how you spell it?) Food has become a major issue in my home. I am throwing out my bathroom scales ,getting my hair done and buying some nice 'big' clothes. I am causing a lot of 'food' stress myself. I am going to do the best that i can with the body I have right now and eat to live not live to eat. Thank you for all your help. My dinner table will now consist of one meal with a variety of sides/veggies and that is it. Heck I will make sure they all take a multi vitamin if I get worried Thank you all so much, I know it wasnt really a CD issue but I think it partly stems from the concern of what everyone is eating. I had no idea when I started to write about grocery bills that it would be quite so life changing
I will keep you posted of the progress if you like |

Hi Mom,
I've said before...this is not just a diet...it's a lifestyle. Having to deal with this permeates into all facets of our lives. We have to deal with this 24x7. Coming to terms with it will take some time and adjustment. Not only for those that it affects directly, but those that affects in-directly. When I first started out, I don't know who it was harder on...myself or Peg. She was trying to do the right thing [buying GF food] and then come to find out it wasn't right, etc. There really needs to be a support group for spouses and loved ones of those with CD/GS. Their world has been turned upside down too.
It sounds like you are on the right track. Having one meal and that's it. I agree - the kids won't starve. Keep plugging way, keep your nose to the grind stone, keep putting one foot in front of the other. Soon - you will have traveled thru the dark of night to find a beautiful sunrise!
Please do keep us posted!! _________________ Al

Yep I am very excited about it all. I told the kids what is happening and there will be no more food fights. They eat if they want but if they dont there are no snacks later. But they get the benefit of no food fights and a choice on the table. Also this has been weighing us down a lot. we are all going to get up and start living. We are off to the movies and the next day hopefully the beach! My DH is also happy I am not going to be wasting my time beating myself up because of my weight. I have had 4 children, stopped smoking (never did it round the kids or pregnant!) and stopped nursing. I need a break. It is so good this site. I had really lost site of what is important. Its not the calories, fat or carbs it good choices that are GF!
ps DH would happily eat eggs and bagels every night. He may be fussy but what he likes he doesnt get bored of. |

Boy does that sound familiar! My husband could live forever on Kraft mac n cheese. He's been eating it almost non-stop for years.
I'm glad you're doing better mom! It's good to remember the important things in life now and then.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Hi Bon,
I am thankful too...for your courage, this place and those that inhabit the "Gluten Free Club House"!!
I am glad we can be of help to you and so many others. We are all walking this path, some of us are just a bit further along in their jouney. Hindsight is 20/20. We can tell you what we've seen and what's coming up over the horizon for those just starting out. _________________ Al

To quote GFSarahSmiles "HOLY CRAP"!! I wonder where we are going wrong?! We are not BIG coupon shoppers, but we do use them. |
Wow! That is amazing. There are only 2 of us and our grocery bill has doubled since we got married and my husband doesn't generally eat most of my gluten free foods. We spend about 100-200 a WEEK on groceries! Wow...I'm still in awe that 4 people can eat for a month on 200...wow. I even use cupons if I can find any that work for items we always buy. I want your secret!!!
As far as my grocery list is concerned:
What I get gluten free/wheat free in a health food store-
dry cereals (healthy valley rice chunch-ems or corn chrunch-ems & envirokids like gorilla munch, etc.), bread & bagels (kinickinick), brownie mix (pamela's), G/F Pantry Muffin/Scone mix (I add bananas, blueberries, apples, etc. and they make very yummy muffins), pastas (Tinkyada my favorite), McCann's Irish Oatmeal (comes from Ireland and grown/processed in seperate fields so it is gluten free!!!), crackers (energy brand), snack bars (enjoy life very berry bars or glutino apple bars), Pizza crust mix (Chebe brand), Nature's Promise organic chicken broth, & all of my gf/wf flours (rice, potato, soy, tapioca, xanthan gum, etc.) I don't buy these items ALL the time just as I need them. I also enjoy cooking and do make things homemade quite often as well. I go to the health food store maybe one a month.
What I get at a regular grocery store-
fresh fruits (mellons, apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, pears, nectarines, strawberries, etc.) & veggies (lettuce, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, peppers, etc.) meat (chciken, pork, fish, beef), dairy (milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt (yoplait), cottage cheese, Breyer's ice cream), frozen veggies, canned veggies/fruit, juices (apple, o.j., cranapple, etc.), condiments (sugar, salt, pepper, ketcup (heinz), mustard, mayo (kraft), butter (conutry crock & regular blocks of butter), salad dressing (wishbone itallian or ranch), rice (brown & white), beans (canned & dried), tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce (hunts traditional or classico creamy alfredo), popcorn, honey, progresso creamy mushroom soup, soda (sprite), spices/herbs, etc etc etc (the list could go on i'm sure!)
As you can see there are still a lot of things you CAN get at a regular grocery store! Hope this helps! |

We keep our grocery bill low in the following ways:
Storing a year's supply of basics (rice, powdered milk, veggies, fruits, etc). We used to store wheat, but alas, those days are gone. This is a fundamental tenet of my religion, but it makes sense for everyine, in my opinion. It allows us to shop sales and stock up when prices are lowest. I mix our milk from the store 50/50 with reconstituted dry milk, and you cannot taste the difference.
Canning our own jam and produce that we grow every year.
I make all of our cleaning products like laundry soap and household cleaners. I use a lot of vinegar, salt and baking soda for cleaning.
We buy in bulk, and try to buy one thing that will work for all of us (ie - only one kind of shampoo for everyone).
I bake almost everything from scratch - cookies, bread, etc.
We almost never eat out. The last time we ate out was in April.
We eat very little meat (which my husband is not all that crazy about, but it's really for his own good).
Hope this helps give you some ideas. We are a one-income family (I'm the wage earner), so we have to do everything we can to save $. I'm sure our grocery bill will go up a little when the baby is born. Those pesky diapers! _________________ -Colleen
