Kathie,
It would help if I had the list of ingredients in a Mac lipstick. (Then I could compare them to your very extensive list!) I've got a few of their lipsticks in with my makeup. I checked the bottom of the sticks but apparently they only list the ingredients on the box and those are long gone.... I'm just wondering if I should stop using them or if anyone out there could check? Thanks! _________________ Cheers!

Don't know if this helps but this is the rest of the print out I had; sorry its kind of hard to read but that's how it transferred when I orginally copied it. Note this is not a list of gluten free lipstick, you will have to read through and compare it to the cosmetic list some of them have gluten in them. I went to clinique awhile back with a list of my things I had at home and camped out there and read all the boxes in the store. They didn't mind.

Hey ladies,
I spoke to Karina/Crowdreamer/Kerri Ann about a month ago in regard to MAC lipstick (love it!!). She told me to stick to the FROST lipsticks by them. I have both Lame (read: LAH-MAY, but we can't do accents here) and Hyper and don't have a problem with either one...MAC lipstick is my favorite...it's about the only makeup I wear, aside from eyeliner...nothin' else, or my skin breaks out...
I had gotten some sample Estee (again, sorry for the absence of an accent aigu! ) Lauder stuff from my sis for Xmas, and I wore the lipstick once...my lips were burning and peeling for a week!!! Yup--that tube hit the bottom of the garbage can with a nice *PLINK*!!!
Hope this helps!!! _________________ ~Torrey

I've compared your Mary Kay list of no-no's to my makeup drawer and the only questionable items are the concealer and the mascara. So it's back to the same question - how is this a problem if the product doesn't get anywhere near your mouth - assuming thorough hand-washing before touching food to avoid cross-contamination.
Somewhere on this forum, I remember reading something about the gluten molecule being too large to get through the skin, so it has to get into the mouth to be problematic. Has anyone read anything new on this theory?
Sometimes I think you guys who have dramatic and immediate reactions are lucky - at least you know right away - I have to wait for the blood work or to see if I keep losing weight. _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

One question for you to consider, when I wear makeup I know that sometimes I may have a little itch, maybe touch my face, rub the corner of my eyes and then do you ever sit and contemplate with your hand near your mouth? Ever put your pen in your mouth to free your hands to do something? Just playing devils advocate here, I don't know how much or little gluten is to much and I don't know about whether it can absorb thru the skin. I do know when I worked at McD's and had to make biscuits my cuticles would get raw from working with the dough. I had to wear gloves. I guess personally if I could find something that didn't have gluten in it I would be more comfortable. Actually I have quit wearing makeup quite awhile back because it was making my eyes burn and I haven't had time to go back to the store and read all the labels again to make sure everything I have is safe. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Thanks, Kathie - I know what you mean. I am pretty good about keeping my hands away from my face - guess I can still hear my mom yelling at me from 50 years ago, but of course - no guarantees. I have contacted my Mary Kay consultant who knows exactly what I use and can perhaps suggest alternatives. Also, I'm a part-time hospital chaplain and am forever washing my hands between patient visits, so maybe that helps. Still, if I can find gluten-free makeup, I will switch too - better safe than sorry. _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

Purrsnikitty.....I read about the gluten molecule and whether or not it can pass through the skin. I need to look into this as some of the products I use do have wheat based stuff in them. However, I am going to have my bloodwork done soon and if it comes back OK, then I doubt I will change anything as I like the products I use. Seems to me that gluten needs to be in the intestinal tract to cause a problem as igA is produced in the intestines...hence the high readings if Celiac. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I will do my best to sort it all out.
One thing I will not change is my haircolor. I went prematurely grey very young (I really did well on the genetic lottery!) and only a very few haircolor products cover grey completely and doesn't fade. I use Framesi, which is an Italian haircolor and it's the best stuff I've ever used on my hair....and I've tried many. There was a brouhaha a few years back about whether haircolor causes cancer and after some study, it was determined that the chemicals (mainly peroxide) do not pose a threat as it doesn't sink into the skin like many people thought. Plus, I figure if it was really harmful, women would be dropping like flies and that hasn't happened!
I will post any information I can find out regarding the topical gluten problem. |

Thanks Torrey and Gang!
I do love the LAH-MAY... and when I checked to see what kind of MAC lipsticks I have more than 1/2 were the Frost types... including Lame. Yea!(Snicker)
As for the Mary Kay - I tried their mascara once and while I most certainly wasn't eating it, when I wore it my eyes turned bright red and watery. Even once I managed to get it off they bothered me for a few days afterwards. It was awful. _________________ Cheers!

Hi ladies!
I am celiac and I use cosmetics from Arbonne International. I am an Independent Consultant with Arbonne so I have the list of products which are gluten free. Arbonne's products are botanically based and formulated in Switzerland and made in USA.
Arbonne has a complete skin care line, aromatherapy, color (make-up), vitamins and weight loss products.
After looking over the list, let me know what you might be interested in. You can check out their website too at www.arbonne.com. I would love to help out any of you!!
Here is a list of the cosmetics that are gluten free:
Eye Pencils, lip pencils, blushers, brow wax, eye shadows, sheer shine duos (lip gloss), concealer, pressed powder, finishing powder, loose powder, bronzing powder, lip saver with SPF 30.

I have seen reports of BOTH. One report says, yes it can be passed. Another report that says no it can't. I have not done any research on this lately tho. _________________ Al

Sometimes I find the information very frustrating, Al. You read one thing and then another that contradicts it. Like I said, I will see what my numbers are before doing anything else. That, to me, is a great way to see if the cosmetic/shampoo/etc. problem is real or not. I highly doubt I am getting gluten through my diet as I'm very careful and never intentionally cheat.
Michelle....thank you very much for this information and I will check out your site. I don't mind switching as long as the products are high quality and they work as well as the brands I currently use. I tend to trust someone who has celiac's themselves...it can make a big difference. |
