Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone noticed a significant change in their PMS symptoms once they went GF?
For the last year or so I've been getting pretty bad PMS...boob tenderness, minor cramps weeks before my period actually arrives, and huge emotional spikes. I'm heading into my 2 month mark being GF, and I've noticed a change.
I skipped last month (which I was expecting since I usually go every other month), and I got it yesterday...which was kind of a shock. I had NO PMS!
I had maybe 2 days of a cramp twinge every now and then, and then boom...it hit me yesterday. Normally when I start to get signs like that, it takes 2 weeks before I actually get it. No tenderness or emotional freak outs either. It was great!
Did anyone else notice changes like this? Or was this just a good month for me? lol
Thanks all!

Hey Ange,
I think it varies with each person. I have heard about people doing really well with PMS and the GF diet though.
My situation was real goofy. I didn't use to have problems with PMS at all... seriously. In Dec. (prior to being dx'd), I ended up in the ER due to a ruptured ovarian cyst. (I didn't know that's what it was at the time.) My PCP put me on birth control pills to stop ovulation to keep that from happening again. I was already extremely ill at this point and developed candida (from the bcp's) on top of everything already going on. The month after going off the pills, I thought I was going to die. (2 months after being dx'd) The cramps were so bad I would lay in the fetal position in bed. I almost passed out one morning on my way to pick up my daughter from singing class. I was very dizzy, lethargic, and had very bad headaches. The pain was unbearable at times and my flow was twice as heavy for twice as long! It calms down a little bit each month, but whew! If I never go through that again, it'll be too soon.
Anyway, I believe you have a good reason to be optimistic about your cycles. Hopefully it'll continue with no PMS. _________________

Hey,
Yeah I know what you mean about the pain...I've had that my whole life. I used to get cramps so bad when I was growing up that I'd throw up from it, or at least have nausea. Plus literally just pace around the house because I couldn't sit still any other way. Once the Advil or whatever I took kicked in, then I'd be unconscious for as long as possible. I went on bcp's for 7 years just to calm my system down. It definitely helped with the cramps. But then a few years ago I went off them because I had no more insurance. Then my cycle really was screwed up. That's when I noticed how drastic I'd skip. Now it's slowly regulating itself, but the pain is back pretty strong. And so was the PMS. I'd never had it before, so this was a whole new world to me.
So not having it this month was a pleasent surprise, and I was curious if it was from the GF diet. I'm hoping that's what it is.
Thanks

I know this reply is kind of late. but i would also like to know if gluten free causes the pms to go away. as of late i had no symptoms and only found out i had started when i went to the bathroom. no emotional outbreaks, no cramps, no warning, no bloating. amazing!!! life is so much easier now. _________________ Gluten is my cryptonite |

Yes, going gluten free will certainly help with PMS symptoms because you're body is now absorbing those vitamins and minerals necessary for a symptom free cycle. Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, potassium, vitamin D, K, B6, B12, well actually all of the B vitamins can be low in women with gluten intolerance as well as IBD. Malnutrition from malabsorption and intestinal inflamation/damage can worsen over time resulting in PMDD (the most severe form of PMS)
The first thing I ask a women complaining of PMS or PMDD is if they have any autoimmune diseases in their immediate family specifically Celiacs, wheat allergies (IgE response), PCOS, MS, Lupus, IBS or thyroid problems even fibromyalgia. I specialize in women's health and PMS/PMDD is one of my specialties. You can read more about how the right nutrition can help by visiting www.cyclediet.com, it's a free website. _________________ Debra,
