You're in the club, you're safe.
Slayer I'd love to tell my brother to shove it, but I'm afraid that'd cause more problems than it's worth. Right now I'm just planning on eating beforehand and trying to figure out a Father's Day gift. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

They didnt believe me when I told them it was actually a nothern European thing and there are probably masses of people that have CD but the Nation Health system won't test them because of money.
Word is getting out everywhere but when your family thinks you are 'making it up' and subjecting your kid to the GF diet for no reason it does tend to get you a bit pissy! Maybe I am making up the type one diabetes thing too and injecting my son with insulin for no reason lol. Sorry did a bit of venting.
My sons teacher also told him he was more likely to get stomach cancer from the diet soda he has to drink (cause of the diabetes) than from the Gluten! Way to go to get a kid to stick to the diet and feel great about his future. Oops sorry still venting. I really am a cheerful person normally! Maybe I need a whole pie! |
This is a good place to vent. We all have been there in one way or another. Mom understands (sort of) that I can't and won't eat wheaty junk, but she does not get how many things that includes. Other people don't even try to understand.
Now I am not really going to do anything to someone's food that would hurt them, but it is funny to think about it. Mrs. P -- it is safe to eat with me, really!
Just keep taking care of your kids and yourself. That is really all we can do. ((hugs)) There are some really dumb people out there and we just have to deal with them the best we can. _________________ Dairy free 7-2004

This is so funny. I remember right after 9/11 we were at the Ladies Bible Study and were discussing the terrorists. One of the ladies in the group said that if the country were to ever truly be taken over and they were coming in homes and her family were threatened, she would make spaghetti for her family and they would all die from the dinner.
Well low and behold, we had a spaghetti dinner after church two weeks later, I jokenly put a sign in her big bowl of spaghetti this is "S"'s spaghetti..........the men were all scratching their heads trying to figure out what we ladies were all laughing about.
I know that you all would not harm anyone.........I was just teasing........walks away trying to convince myself: 'yes, I was just teasing." LOL _________________

Hi I'm new here. I just have to say I'm glad I'm not alone here with the family issues. Thanks for being able to vent here.
Thank God we are staying home for Father's Day. But has anyone come across this one. This happened on Mothers Day. My sister in law invited us to her home for dinner and said she was having a barbaque and there wasn't going to be anything there I could eat. I brought my own food but was too embarresed to fix it so I waited until desert and had coffee that was it for six hours. I honestally feel that she did it on purpose.
And let me tell you about House of THAI food all most all of it is gluten/wheat free. They have meals to go. All you need is water and a microwave. Everything you need is in the to go package even a fork. And a lid with holes to drain the water out. I also keep plastic utensiles,and non parashable foods in my car incase I need to get my own food if an emergancy pops up. _________________ After fifty one years of suffering with blisters and gut pain. Hi Bonnie,
Welcome to the board!! Glad you've come to vent Lord know, we certainly understand
I can understand your shyness about fixing your own food. I too was like that at first. I didn't want people know, afraid of what they'd think/say, blah blah blah. Then it dawned on me...Hey, how else are they going to know if they aren't educated about it. Please, don't be embarrassed about it. It's really a good thing You always know exactly what you will be having (and like it!!).
It really is a great teaching tool. Somebody is bound to ask why you have different food. [If you get really good at it, they won't really know it's different food, because you'll make an GF version of their gluten polluted food]. Then you can explain what's going on and why.
Since I don't know your SIL, it's hard to say why she did it. Might it be possible that she is afraid to make you something - fearing she'll make you sick? To "outsiders" aka the NGF world - it's a very confusing concept. Heck...even to the "insiders" just starting out it's troublesome. And even is they did fix you something - you'd have to worry about CC and the whole nine yards. It really is best to bring your own food - that way you know.
Have you discussed your dietary requirements with the rest of your family? Do they give you static about it?
Good luck!! _________________ Al

Hi thanks for the reply. My friends and family know all about my celiac disorder. I have been to my sister in laws many times and brought food and never had to use it because there was always something I could eat. I think that she was in a bad mood or something because she always goes out of her way for everyone when it comes to holiday eating. As I'm writing this maybe it wasn't her maybe it was her husband. Cuz he is heartless to everyone around him and he is the one that cooked. After all it was Mothers Day.LOL Who knows I was just venting.
But honestally I feel that my friends or so I thought were my friends don't call or come around anymore. I've got Ankylosing Spondylitis which is an arthritis that comes from having a digestive disorder thanks to CD. It is very crippeling.
This is something a lot of people with CD do not know about and I will be posting web sites about this in the soon near future.
I did post something in the autommune section today that was my first post.
Thanks for sharing. bonny _________________ After fifty one years of suffering with blisters and gut pain. And now arthritis.

Bonnie, you are doing them a favor by bringing your own, feel no shame in that! I'm going to a work picnic on Sunday and asked if I could bring a salad. Turns out there will be salad, fruit, grilled veggies, and hamburgers so I'm just bringing dressing. _________________ Lauren

Hi Lauren,
Do you know if the hamburgers are preformed patties? Sometimes preformed patties can contain a filler (ie wheat). What about the grill they were grilled on? MIght it be contaminated?

Grill will be cleaned first, then veggies grilled then meat. If the patties are pre-formed I can have a hot dog instead, or just stick with veggies. I'm flexible, as long as I don't have to eat just chips I am happy. _________________ Lauren

Hi Lauren thanks for the info. I have read that celiacs can not eat things like hot dogs, liver worst or any worst products and chips are totally out.
Am I missing out on something that we can have? _________________ After fifty one years of suffering with blisters and gut pain. And now arthritis.

There's tons of chips we can have, including the baked ones (huzzah!). All-natural beef hot dogs should be ok too. Just make sure to check the labels.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Some Boar's Head franks and knockwurst state "gluten free" on the package. Not all do, so be sure to read carefully. Ball Park hot dogs are also GF. Those are the ones I know about - has anyone found others? _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

You definitely aren't alone. Shortly after I was diagnosed my sister, who now is very super accommodating to my gluten-freeness, was dead-set on having her Birthday celebration at an Italian restaurant (which had ZERO options for me) I tried to talk her out of it but to no avail. I remember being super bummed. I ate at home before I left to go to the restaurant and during the whole meal just sat with a glass of water in front of me. I must have looked truly pathetic, even though I had an okay time. I think my sis felt really bad afterwards because she's never held another family celebration at a restaurant that didn't have at least one option for me.
So I guess I'm saying that sometimes maybe it's a good thing to let the family see how serious you are about your diet that you'll go and not eat anything. Or like Al said, preparing your own food is good as an educational tool. Please don't be shy. You can't not eat because of what someone might think about you. They aren't the ones that have to face the bathroom at the end of the meal, if you get my drift. Also what I've found is once you open up the dialog about CD most people are curious and ask a million questions... remember people are most afraid of the unknown. So if you can educate them about CD they may not think twice about it or you. It just becomes "one of those things". _________________ Cheers!
