Hey,
Thanks Al, these are great articles. I only got through the first one. The summary of the article on lupus stated that "enteropathy is no longer a prerequisite for the diagnosis of gluten sensitivity." Wow! Perhaps the ""gold standard really is the "old" standard. The first article said that only 1/3 of patients with neurological disorders associated wth gluten sensitivity have villous atrophy on duodenal biopsy." The part with the question "Isn't the neurological damage nutritional? That is very interesting also. Well, lots to think about.
My Dad has had systemic inflammation of unknown origin for 30 years. He is interested in this and will probably get tested soon he said.

Hi Patty,
That is correct!! We need to get the rest of the medical community to see the WHOLE spectrum of gluten sensitivity. CD is just one slice of it. Just like UV light is a part of the whole light spectrum. Unfortunately the dx for CD is way too late - way too much damage has occurred. Damaged villi is considered "end stage" for this disease. WOW - just think if docs would understand that could be prevented by recognizing the early warning signs!!! Many people fall thru the cracks. They go and have the biopsy and they find no damage - the Docs tell them - No CD. Meanwhile they continue to eat gluten, continue to feel like crap, continue to incurr damage. Then one day...guess what...they have CD!!!! How crazy is that!! (just a side note: I don't think research has proven that GS will turn into CD. I think the current thought is...that it MIGHT. I'm not willing to take that chance.

I wondered about that too at first...is the neuro damage due to lack of nutrition or does gluten cause neuro damage in and of itself. The answer is yes - it will do both. I ran across the answer I think in one of those articles.

Good I am glad he is open to this. I feel my Mom is gluten issues too...but she is not open at all to it.
