Does anybody have a good substitute for oatmeal? I know GF oats exist, but:
1. They're too expensive
2. I really think I have an oat intolerance, they make me so sick (waaaay before gluten made me sick).
This morning the office's kitchen smelled like fresh oatmeal with maple syrup.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Quinoa flakes may be a reasonable substitute. Cream of buckwheat is a good hot cereal, though it is not like oatmeal. _________________ -Colleen

I like Buckwheat. I tried the Alti-Plano Gold Quinoa breakfast packs I got at the Celiac Conf. but didn't really like the flavors.
But then, I am not suppose to have sugar(s) and milk so what do I put on a morning cereal food????? I used to have oatmeal everymorning because it was filling. But my system got so bad I had to stop even before being dx CD. Plus I used to use ALOT of brown sugar.
So now I just get depressed thinking about eating and especially breakfast. I have to figure out this natural sugar substitute thing. I haven't had time to research that yet. |

Exactly Walker! I want something warm and filling, something that'll keep me full till lunch time. That used to be oatmeal or hot cream of wheat. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I know this isn't "Oatmeal" however, I found this, and loved it. Personally, I always grew up liking cream of wheat (go figure!) better than oatmeal. Of all of the brown rice hot cereals I have tried, this is by far the closest to Cream of wheat. Oh and soooooo yummy with fresh blueberries!!! *drooling* thinking about it! _________________ Kristie M.

| Also not oatmeal, but I really like Bob's Red Mill Creamy Rice hot cereal. However, I always hated Cream of Wheat, so I like it because it's not like that. |

I don't mind plain old white hominy (corn grits) with a bit of maple syrup on them. It's sorta like Cream of Wheat. I also have used a cream of buckwheat and/or buckwheat groats to make up for oatmeal. Haven't tried Quinoa flakes, though I love whole Quinoa grain just cooked up and eaten plain. One of my breakfast favorites, when time permits, is hashed brown potatoes -- those always do the trick. I guess none are a good oatmeal replacement though, and I really used to love oats. _________________ Mike

I know that eating oats is controversial, but has anyone tried the rolled oats from glutenfreeoats.com? I've read as much as I can re: reasons to try and reasons to not try allegedly non-contaminated oats, and from what I read on the site, they seem to take great pains to avoid CC from the fields all the way through processing and packaging. _________________ Nance

Hi Kathy,
Is this the product?

If so, Peg really likes it. As for me, it's OK - but I was not an oatmeal eater in my NGF days either. I prefer may oats in cookie form _________________ Al

nancw - I see from your sig that you are self-diagnosed less than 6 months ago. Many doctors (mint included) reccommend that celiacs wait one year after diagnosis before trying oats again. This will ensure that you are well on your way to healing you villi. You may want to wait a while before taking the plunge....
I am going to try them soon, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. _________________ -Colleen

Thanks Colleen. I had read/heard that too, so I will wait a bit.
There is nothing like oatmeal on a cold morning, and the other hot cereals I have tried just aren't cutting it! _________________ Nance

Not like oatmeal at all but if you want a hot breakie, try what I have every morning.
1 cup cooked brown rice
raisins (about a tablespoon or two)
one egg
I mix it all up and nuke it. It's got protein, complex carbs and fiber, and the raisins could count as a fruit serving. It fills me up fine.
I always keep cooked brown rice in my fridge. |
