I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) last winter but when the toast- & cracker-based "BRAT" diet my doctor and I were going to use as a baseline in determining my trigger foods made bathroom matters worse, I decided to drop the wheat & gluten--immediate improvement! Unfortunately, unpredictable IBS triggers continue to pop up, no matter how careful I am. I cook for 5 ... it's taken so long to adapt ... and I still just don't feel great a lot of the time. Can anyone identify? Thanks! |

Definitely identify. Why me!
As careful as I am going GF, I still ended up in the hospital and now I can not get my system to settle down in over a month. I thought I was going to really start feeling better but alas that must be for another day.
Hope you start feeling better soon! How long have you been on the GF diet? I have been on it maybe 6 mths but in Aug had a huge event that made me go back to square one. |

Yikes! And you don't know why this happened/happens? What is the "event" you speak of?
I've been GF since February. The last time I ate (a bagel) my pants nearly popped! I was all done at that moment! |

You could still be getting some contamination from somewhere else. Do you eat out alot? Switch utensils around?
You could also have another food intolerance. Have you tried going milk-free for awhile? Lots of people have problems with milk for the first year or so after starting this diet. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I ate something that was suppose to be GF and was not. For me, Gluten not only causes malabsorption of food nutrients but also liquids are not absorbed. Unfortunately, we need water to live. I ingested something with gluten and got sicker over a 5 day period until the only option is to be hospitalized and given an IV to get liquids into my system. But the gluten ingestion also made me really sick and inflammed my whole system.
This has happened to me 5 times since 1999 (very expensive for me). I didn't know what was going on until I was dx CD this year. Before I was diagnosed with spastic colon, IBS, etc. I think the damage is pretty severe for me at this point given 30 yrs being un-dx and having multiple autoimmune diseases. Just my happy luck! |

OK, I'm new here ... so do you mind explaining the Kitchen Wench?! heehee
Yes, cross-contamination is a possibility - I guess if I had a positive intestine dx I'd feel permitted to really obsess. I already spend so much time obsessing over conscious food choices ... *sigh*
Re: other food intolerance - since I have IBS, I avoid: dairy; egg yolks; tomato skins; alcohol; coffee canNOT be avoided, so I take it in moderation; non-veg oil; cigarettes ... shall I go on? The list is long
I called up for an appointment with a GI yesterday (nothing until December). I suppose I should start keeping a diet diary again. Does anyone know of a good tracking template?

Wow, that is extreme. Poor thing what did you eat (if you can name it without feeling nauseous)? Was it marked GF or were the ingredients misleading? |

LOL, no problem! The character is from the movie V for Vendetta. I'm just making fun of him.
The food diary is a good idea. I don't know if there's any templates; I would just write down everything you eat per day. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Oh yeah!! It's a matter of figuring out your other triggers. Some of mine are corn syrup, esp high fructose corn syrup, and casein. I suspect soy would be, too, if I ate a lot of it, but I already limit it for my son. I still get occasional bouts that I don't know where they come from. I'm thinking of seeing if I can get some kind of a kit to save some poop when I'm having the big D and have it tested for parasites or whatever. I just feel like it has to be something. I'm also thinking of getting some food sensitivity blood tests done.
I've considered keeping a food diary but at this point it doesn't happen often enough for that to work. What I try to do now (and usually forget!) is to write down everything I can remember that I've eaten up to a couple of days prior to the episode. My thought is that maybe I can find a common element.
Also, I think that there's some gut healing that has to happen. Once your gut has healed it will be less reactive.

Here's what I did...
I used a database program called FileMaker. You can use a a word processor app or Spreadsheet app if you like too.
Date & time of when I ate
Very detailed info as to what I ate
a rating system of how I felt: 10 = normal, 0=half past dead
also logged BM's too.
I would update the journal with how I felt as needed. If I felt sx's, I mark the time and a description and rate it.
I hope this helps!! _________________ Al

Oh--like maybe the casein and corn syrup in my one evil food allowance (a precious Tbsp of Coffeemate)???
Smart thinking on both the sample and the "common thread." Book your bloodwork now in case you have to wait months to get in. We are miserable for so long before we decide to actually see a professional, and then it's just more waiting LOL don't delay!
I created a spreadsheet of all my oft-eaten foods with associated ingredients. The "dairy" type condiments are very soy-based, and there is a fair amount of corn/corn derivatives as well ... Then again, with IBS it could just be when/how I am eating ... ah, the never-ending overanalysis ... |

The problem with figuring out some of this stuff is that it can be delayed. Hence the name: delayed onset food intolerances
You could eat something and maybe not see "results" for 1 day or 2. So it takes a close eye when reviewing it.
I didn't fully see what was going on in my food journal until AFTER the fact!! Then it was obvious _________________ Al

Exactly, Al. Or you think that what you have JUST eaten is the culprit |

I am not sure exactly which product it was. One was a GF (and so marked in bold on the front of the package) chips that I have purchased alot over the last 6 months (I like chips and salsa). The other was Trader Joe's raw almonds and raw sunflower seeds that were suppose to be GF but they are not marked on the packaging just on their GF list. So I am not sure which one it was or what happened? |

On Oprah recently, Dr. Mehmet Oz was on to promote his new book "You on a Diet"
http://www.realage.com/doctorCenter/YouOnADiet/entry1a.aspx?cbr=YDGGLE12
One of the things he mentioned totally avoiding was high fructose corn syrup, which seems to be in just about everything, and it's evil!
In order to avoid IBS attacks, I eat gluten free (and now I'm grain free, sigh), avoid fried foods, dairy, soy, eggs, eating a bunch of nuts, caffeine... Knock on wood I haven't had an IBS attack for several years. I still have problems with constipation (which used to alternate with attacks), but I can live life with that! |
