This insidious syndrome of gluten sensitivity/celiac demands that we address "Food Labels". This incorporates brand names and in order for individuals to safely adhere to diet and learn from product lines brand names NEED to be supplied! I feel this is a dire necessity.
There are products that will specifically list gluten in their ingredients if it exists. One in particular is Nestle. Another one is Hormel. Heinz ketchup is GF too. McCormick spices are supposedly all GF but to make sure always call the companies when in doubt~ that is a rule of thumb.
*Do not lick envelopes as the glue may contain gluten. _________________ I Am Someone Special

Food Labeling legislation was recently signed to address issues pertaining to those with food allergies, please see:
http://www.celiacforums.com/celiac-disease-news.php#falcpa
Many of the bill's supporters have begun to comply with the bill's food allergy labelling requirements prior to enforcement.
Also, posting of brand names, company names and websites to the forum is perfectly OK. |

I am new to all this. My son is 2.5 and I was told that anything labeled natural or artificial flavoring is actually MSG which I know is a gluten containing product.
Do I avoid all items listing Natural &/or Artificial Flavoring on the label?
HELP

Hi Nina,
Welcome to the board. You are correct about be wary of natural or artifical flavors. They can contain gluten. More so the the "natural flavors". (I think on the Delphi board I read that artifical flavors always GF - but don't hold me to that) Companies can hide gluten in that label. Calling the company is the best way to know. In the Proper Foods forum there is a list of GF friendly companies. Also in there are lists of GF foods.
So - unless you know the source of those natural flavors - you need to stay away from it. Some companies are gluten free friendly in that they won't hide gluten. If it's there - they will tell you.
As for MSG - if it's made in the USA - its supposed to be GF (I need to do a bit more research on that to verify it). MSG is touchy all the way around. Many people react to it (BIG migrane trigger!) - regardless of it's GF status. _________________ Al

Hi-
As a new GF person, I really could use some brand names. Especially, brands I can find in a regular grocery store, not just on-line, Trader Joe's, etc.
Although, I shop at Naturefare, etc. it would be nice not to have to locate a store when I travel to a different area.
I feel like this is a secret club with a language I don't speak, and by the time I can reel-off labels at will-I really won't need help anymore.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it-

It is so confusing at first. You'll get it figured out soon though. Anytime anyone here says something you don't understand, or uses an abbreviation you are not familiar with, don't be afraid to ask. My experience here has been that everyone here is so helpful and friendly.
Here's a link that might help you figure out some safe brands.
http://forums.glutenfree.com/topic1899.html
There are several companies listed there who are very responsible with their labeling, and they won't hide gluten in their ingredient lists. Also the manufacurers and products section in general is a great place to check out. There is also a search feature on this site that you might find helpful. Just remember that any information about the GF status of foods could be outdated, so if in doubt check with the company. Walmart is a very good place to find GF products. I believe they label all their brand foods that are GF as such. Hope this helps.

Hi Sarah,
Yeah, it's like walking into a foreign country alright! The good news is that we can translate for ya till you get up to speed in glutenfree-eese.
GF food can be found in almost any store - if you just know how to look for it. Heck, I bet even some of your faves are GF [excluding the obvious stuff of course ].
Knowing which companies are GF friendly will help tremendously. This will allow you to look at labels and tell. Steph was kind enough to give you the link that contains this list:
These guys will not hide gluten [wheat, barley, rye or oats]:
Kraft Family Product List - A list of all the products Kraft has.
Unilever Family Product List - A list of all the products Unilever has.
ConAgra Foods Family Product List - A list of all the products ConAgra Foods has.
Hormel Family Product List - A list of all the products Hormel Foods has.
If you haven't seen it, please check out Our Thread on GF Diet Boot Camp. There's lots of info in there for those just starting out. It's pretty long - but worth the time.
