Hello all - my name is Amy and my 8 year old daughter was just diagnosed a few days ago.
Just today she was asking if she could eat Skittles candy. I read the label and it looked OK to me... but what do I know?
Is there a master list for things like that?
I'm really in the dark so far, though I've been educating myself like mad since we found out.
I will browse around other folk's posts, but our main concern now is getting our daughter to eat more than just fruit and rice cakes. All her "regular" foods are off limits now, and she does not like meat or dairy. So getting varaiety and protien into her will be hard.
Her main form of protien was Chinese pork dumplings. But since she is a picky eater they had to be a PARTICULAR kind of dumpling from a SPECIFIC store. Now we are out of luck.
HELP.....
I would really love to hear almost anything from any parent out there.
Thanks.... |

There's no real master list, but if you go to the company's website sometimes they'll list everything and their allergen info. Most people around here seem to keep their own master list, their own collections.
There's lots of ideas on here for meals. Just keep browsing around, you'll find something. She can still have bread if she likes sandwiches, just make sure it's GF (usually rice based).
I'm not sure if it'll work or not, but you might want to sit down with your daughter and have a talk about these new food problems. Maybe you can reach a compromise: you'll try to find substitutes for the foods she likes if she's willing to try more food. A picky daughter + GF diet = not as many food choices.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Hi, Amy. You have gotten some good advice from the people here. My son turns 8 next month, and he was diagnosed almost a year ago (I was diagnosed 8/05). I know you are feeling like you are drowning right now, but it does get better. I spent many hours crying in grocery store aisles because it seemed like I could not eat anything. But now I think we eat pretty good.
Yes, Skittles are fine. Beware of food lists you see on the internet or get from people. Manufacturers change their formulations all the time, and something that is safe today may not be safe tomorrow. For a brief instant, Trix and Cocoa puffs were safe, but then the manufacturer added the wheat back in. Total bummer. We need to read the label EVERY TIME we buy something, even if we have bought it 100 times before. Somewhere on this forum, there is a list of companies that will clearly list gluten. When I was first diagnosed, I printed it off and carried it to the store with me.
Let us know how we can help you. There are several of us with kids on here, and we've all been in the trenches and know how hard it can seem at first. _________________ -Colleen
