I'm not sure I picked the right place to post this. All my life I have had difficulty eating any raw fruits, raw veggies, or raw nuts. I get HORRIBLE stomach pain. It has gotten progressively worse as I get older. If I even eat a piece of lettuce on a sandwich I get really bad stomach pain. My daughter, who is also CD, has a similar problem, but just w/ raw veggies. She will get symptoms very close to the ones she has when she has eaten gluten.

Just wondering if anyone else has similar things? Or any ideas? Antacid does nothing, neither does prescription acid reducer.

For the last year I have developed a problem with too many raw vegetables, I used to love salad but I don't seem to digest any of it now. Don't know why.

That is quite odd. If the foods were not fresh, and were sprayed with sulfites or the like, I'd suspect that (like on salad bars)... but, with truly fresh fruit and veggies, I have no idea, especially if it is *all* veggies across the board. Maybe it's just the fiber content.

Isto, do you experience the same pain if you were to pre-grind all the veggies into something like a V8 drink? Just wondered if having them ground up finely would relieve any of the symptoms.

I can eat cooked fruits and veggies so MUCH better than I can the raw ones and I think it has to do with the enzymes in the fresh foods--some of them can cause serious digestion issues in people, especially if you already have food issues like CD or allergies.

Also, with the raw, if I make sure they're fully ripe and peeled, I do better. I am now on digestive enzymes (not papaya, but serious hardcore enzymes) and they've been helping me so much. Apparently, I don't digest my food right if I don't take them and I've noticed a big difference since I've been on them.

Cooking them also helps soften the peels or meat, which can contain alot of fiber.

GF Mike - I have juiced raw fruits and vegetables and still have the problem to a lesser degree.

Well, I stick with my original assessment: that sounds odd Smile
It sure be interesting to know what the exact origin of your pain from veggies is. If some veggies are worse than others, perhaps you could narrow down to something like acidic/alkalinity factors, or Salicylate levels, or something.

It's enzymes. Denatured by cooking. Sounds very strange at first, but I have heard of other people with the same problem.

do you know what they did to help the problem, or did they just never eat anything raw?

Just not eat anything raw. I think that fresh steamed veggies might be enough to denature the enzymes, but I'm not a biologist and some of them require different temperatures and/or pressure.

Thank you, Lauren! It's better to know I should just stop trying to eat them than to keep trying different things and feeling awful!

I have multiple allergies and sensitivities and a recent connection was made between food plants and other plant families.

For example: I'm allergic to ragweed. I also can't tolerate eating lettuce. My reactions to ragweed differ from my reactions to lettuce, YET, I react to both. My allergest suggested that this is b/c they come from the same plant family.

Maybe that would be another avenue to explore?

Good luck!

Me too--if the juice is raw, I get pretty bad stomach cramps, pasturized, I'm fine with it.
