I am so mad. I have been doing so fabulously, and had TWO fritos...corn right? Spent the rest of the afternoon in the bathroom and bed. Anyone else know that Fritos had gluten?

Juile,
Sorry to hear that
The last I knew Fritos were OK. I use them to scoop up egg salad It maybe a contamination issue. They may not have cleaned the line very well or you got some of the first bags after the change over. I seem to remember people complaining about contamination issues at FritoLay. Delphi is a good place to check this.
Do you know if you are really sensitive? It varies with everyone.
I'll have to check around to see if their status has changed. _________________ Al

| Dietitians will tell you that Fritos are OK. But, the fact is that you have to check the ingredients on each bag before purchase. Some varieties of Fritos do state that they have wheat products in them. |

You mean there are other types of Fritos?? Hmmm I've only seen 2 kinds - the standard size and the Scoops. Oh - they had a BBQ flavor one awhile back. Thats a possiblity. I never like those - so I never looked at them. I know some Dorititos flavors are not OK.
Wow...I guess there is a whole bunch of Frito Flavors!...I don't think I've ever seen half of these!! LOL!! Yes - it does say at the bottom of the ingreds what the allergens are. _________________ Al

So it is possible that the bag was contaminated?? How do I protect myself from that? Actually, I guess I already know the answer...just stick with non-processed foods.
Thanks for the feedback.

| No chance of contamination--the FritoLays dieticians will tell you that now, regular Lays, Ruffles, Fritos, and Lays Stax are made on dedicated lines. |

in the Clan Thompson book I have all products from Frito Lay company may contain traces of gluten as their belts are only washed with water between batches.
So I've avoided them, I found I was sick every time I had tostitos. |

Wow ... I wonder if it varies between plants (or where ever it is that they make the stuff) I eat Tostitios all the time and don't have problems. I just eat the plain, original ones though. Does anyone know if it can or does vary between plants? Maybe the lines are dedicated in some regions and not in others? I dunno ... just thinking aloud. _________________ Sarah

| My husband's major symptom is mouth sores. Was so bad last week he quit eating. He's almost healed and he's gotten into something again. Said he had Lay's potato chips today and also Tostitos Salsa on his baked potato. Now, they're both safe, right? Both Frito Lay products. |

The potato chips are OK. I think the Salsa is OK - I'd have to look it up.
Have you noticed if tomatoes will set off his mouth ulcers? They cause them to appear in my Father In Law's mouth. They are highly acidic. One of the things to lay off of for reflux/heartburn problems. Stawberries too I think. _________________ Al

My family has had problems with Baked Lays and Tostitos Scoops. We've also had problems with Edward and Sons Rice snaps/crackers and Diamond almond nut thins.
We have never had a problem with Garden of Eaten' (we buy at Whole Foods), but we always check the label for each bag we buy.
Lundberg's Rice Chips (several varieties) are labelled gf (also from Whole Foods). |

I usually get Garden of Eaten and will get the Lundberg ones, too. Those are delicious! Especially if you like those thin rice crackers, really a neat taste.
I wish I could find a tortilla chip that doesn't break so easily though. Both of those listed above generally are small enough and when I make nachos or something like that they tend to be pretty small pieces, end up eating them with a fork. _________________ Stephanie |

I can't eat fritos at all, and even recently had a reaction to Baked Lays, my former favorite chips. I like the rice snaps but got burned out on them very quickly.
My replacement for Fritos is something called Polenta Chips. I get them in the health food section of my local Hy-Vee (I'm in Nebraska).
They taste like a crispier, corn-ier version of Fritos without all that oily flavor. They're fantastic, and the only problem is that I can eat an entire bag in just one sitting.
They're also shaped like a scoop, so I use them to scoop up guacamole or salsa. Yum! |
