I have celiac but not dermatitis herpetiformis
I was wondering if I was able to use soaps/cosmetics that contain gluten, if I'm not internally ingesting them?? Will I react if I use these things externally?

wendy:
I just got back from a celiac meeting here in spokane, they were talking about cosmetics. The answer they came up with is that "Yes" you have to avoid gluten containing cosmetics. They gave an example that the average lady will internalize 60 lbs of lipstic per year. So if it contains gluten, you guessed it, you got problems. They were also saying call the manufactures of the products, ask if it contains gluten. You migh call the CSA (Celiac Sprue Association) Ask if they have a product listing for cosmetics. Actually I just looked at the 9th edition of the CSA product guide they do have some listings of some cosmetics . I hope that helps. That's all I remember. TJ

Hi,

It does sound like it's important to keep all forms of gluten out of your mouth, and shampo, lotions, cosmetics can all get in the mouth.

However, I would question that one could get 60 "lbs" of lipstick in their system in one year. Could that be ounces or grams?? Because if you figure the math, it's impossible. One tube of lipstick (MaryK) has only .13 ounces. It would take about 7- 1/2 tubes to equal 1 oz. If you used 12 tubes a year (one per month) that's only 1.56 oz.

Maybe one of you Math whizzes could figure it. Anyway, it sure is tedious figuring this all out, isn't it?

Before I have my teeth cleaned the next time, I'll have to have them check if that tooth polish cleaner is gluten-free. Anyone know?

Patty

Thanks, Patty, that made me think a little too hard, too. Of course I don't use any lipstick so I guess I just don't know. But my lip stuff (chapstick, etc) always seem to be around for years so I guess I just use much anyway.

Can you imagine 60 pounds of lipstick???? Maybe in an entire lifetime (if you live to 150!)

katarah

My daughter has to avoid everything with gluten..the other night she played with playdoh..that is a no, no...she reacted for the next 24 hours..what i do is email the companys and ask them..don't do this if you are short on time..it takes time for them to respond. if they don't respond i don't use it...you don't want to put yourself through anymore than you are already..Crest has emailed me back and said that their products are safe.. good luck.. Now that's a snazzy looking picture, Al. Much better. Though you missed a little lipstick, uh there in the corner... yeah, that's it...

Very Happy
