I ran into our pediatrician at our basketball game today, and though I felt bad talking (his) shop on a Saturday, I had to ask him if he was familiar w/ CD, because I can't wait until DS's bday in March. He said "of course!" and when I told him I was living GF, he said that this warranted a lengthy discussion, and that he was quite willing to do the bloodwork on my son if I want that to happen. He said that the ped GI's he knows are of two different schools of thought, but that if I can wait, we can go into detail in March. BTW - DS doesn't seem to have gluten issues per se, but does have some emotional /behavioral things going on, and has always had a sensitive tummy and I wonder if cutting out gluten could be helpful.
At first pass it seems that this particular ped. knows quite a bit about CD and is willing to work with us to evaluate Jack's potential for, at the very least, gluten sensitivity. _________________ Nance

Wow - that's refreshing!
I am glad that he is willing to "think outside the box" a bit and travel down that path with you.
I think you might be amazed if you do decide to take Jack GF. I have seen many instances when the child's behavior has changed drastically due to gluten and/or dairy removal! It's a Jekyl and Hyde transformation. _________________ Al

Thought I'd post an update since DS had his 6-year-old checkup this week. Pediatrician and I talked at length about the possibility of gluten issues for him, but agreed to no bloodwork at this time since he shows no obvious symptoms at all, his growth curve is excellent (90% in both height and weight), and since my blood work was negative even at time of dx (or non-dx as the case may be).
I try to keep DS's diet gluten-light and doc agreed that was also a good idea as long as he is getting other grains, fiber and diversity in his diet. I'm feeling good about this experience and that I have laid groundwork in the event that gluten issues rear their ugly heads in the future. _________________ Nance
