Cloudscome, I know exactly how you feel. This GF diet is very new to me. Felt really good for a couple of days - gone downhill again.
Don't know what has caused it. Been totally GF as far as I can tell. Last night got swollen, stomach, feet, face. I think salad disagrees with me.
Is this possible? Just lettuce, tomato, fetta and GF dressing (cut out cucumber in case it was that). Then I think it's maybe the cheese, or is the tomatoes, or is the bananas or yoghurt I had during the day?
This is so frustrating!

I forgot to mention I had 2 glasses of wine on Tuesday night, could this be the culprit?
I do not my tolerance for alcohol has reduced drastically over the past few months. Start getting tipsy and a hangover while I'm drinking the first glass!
Is this related to CD?
Sorry for all the stupid questions!
Thanks guys.

Hi Yvonne,
What you experience is common. Many times people will feel better and then feel worse. It could be a couple of things:
As the gluten is being purged from your system you do feel worse for awhile.
Could be other foods. Now the gluten is gone, you are noticing other foods that maybe causing problems. Diary is a biggie.
Could be hidden gluten. Gluten is really really sneaky. It thought I was GF at first, but I was eating Twizzlers for a couple of months...flour is the 2nd ingredient on the list!
Some people do react to wine (even tho most wine is GF, winecoolers are another story). They react to the sulfites. Many times they get headaches & migranes.
Hang in there tho!! Don't give up!!
As far as being tipsy on the 1st glass of wine...I wonder if it could be an absorbtion issue. I don't know the mechanics of exactly how & where alcohol gets into the blood stream. How long have you been GF? Maybe you are absorbing better (more alcohol into the blood stream)??? I'm just thinking out loud (and maybe out of my backside ) Interesting question tho...I have to poke around a bit.... _________________ Al

I know there is no gluten in distilled vinegars (with no gluten-containing ingredients added after distallation) or in wine, but they both upset my husband. Our household is gf, and almost cf. He also avoids nitrites (like in most bacon, ham, deli meats), and dyes, esp Yellow #5 and Red #40.
What is it!? I thought it might be sulfites, but the some of the canned macaroons have sulfites and they don't bother him.
By the way, he likes Ramapo Valley gf beer from NY. Orders by phone for Fed Ex delivery. |

I know just what you mean!! It is making me crazy!
I have noticed that red wine makes my mouth feel swollen, tongue gets sore, etc., so I think there is something in it I am allergic to. White wine seems OK. I am not a big drinker, so that is alright with me. I have a friend who is allergic to lettuce, spinach, and other greens, so it might be that. Some people react to all the nightshade relatives, like potato and tomato. Bananas make me feel sick to my stomach. It's taken years of evidence for me to believe that myself, and people still tell me all the time that bananas are GOOD for an upset stomach and I should eat more. It's one of those times when I have a hard time listening to my own body, but I am trying to get better at it! Dairy seems to be a problem for me, but at least there are those Lactaid things you can use to deal with it. Wish we had something like that for gluten! So I think, yeah, it probably is the salad. Too bad!! |

Hey new here, but not to celiac
Interesting thought to go with coming off of wheat etc. Dr. Stewart (treats neurology issues, Autism etc) gave us a book, in it was a topic on the 'withdrawls of gluten' it was related to that of drug withdrawls because of the chemicals in the brain that are effected by the protiens etc. ( We definately have seen behaviorel issues with/without gluten) ANYWAY the suggestion was to take Alka Seltzer Gold to help with the withdrawls. Have not tried, just a FYI. |

Be sure to check to see of Alka Seltzer gold is gf.
Also, Lactaid and similar products don't help if you're casein (milk protein, not milk sugar) intolerant. Can be sensitive to the sugar, the protein, or both. Lactaid chewables may not be gf? |

Many Celiacs will experience this. Once the villi recover, their lactose intolerance disappears. An enzyme called Lactase is produced by the tips of the villi that breakdown the lactose.
The last I heard AlkaSeltzer GOLD is GF...the regular Alka Seltzer is not...but I have not verfied this yet. _________________ Al

How can I tell lactose intolerance from milk allergy? Should I just bite the bullet and try some lactose free milk? _________________ ElaineT

We just started noticing that we no longer had issue with milk products or corn or any of the foods that seemed to have given us 'trouble' in the past.

I ordered the www.foodintol.com "The Tuesday Club". Just got it. It cost $149.00 USD but it asks lots of questions and you check off what symptoms you have for each item and them you follow a diet which I start next week. The #1 thing that it shows me is that a lot of my symptoms are yeast related besided gluten. So, don't know if it is worth it to you but for me, if it will help me come to a conclusion so I can know what I can and can't have. Breads, pastries, waffles and such without gluten seem to hurt me. I've started losing weight again and my stomach is crying a lot so I hope this elimination deal will help me. Good luck! _________________ Nikki from Texas |
