Confused Well, the chances of getting support from family and doctors concerning my son and cd and need for GF foods as well as his need for dairy free foods, has now been pushed back even further.
During my 30th B-day celebration Crying or Very sad Hubby and I agreed to a dairy and gluten test, and gave Matthew a piece of the Blueberry crumb pie.
Here, I was sure he would react no later than the next day.
Here's where I come very confused, before the pie, he showed allergy/cold symptoms. Since then he's spiked a fever and was dx with an ear infection and possible sinus infection. sleeping and eating has declined, and has become quite cranky!! but as I said, he had beginning symptoms before ever having the pie.)
Now the reaction we were expecting (the one I was sure would happen) hasn't occured at all. Yes, I'm referring to diarrhea. His stools have remained normal. Confused UGH! I just want to scream!!! Because I ****KNOW**** that if I were to put dairy and gluten back into his diet, it may take days, but he ****WILL**** react, but now hubby is even more sure that these foods are alright for him. I'm sure the doctor is thinking the same thing. Which leads me to the other thing I'm feeling completely alone on.. It's OT.. but I'm talking about the antibiotics, his doc is considering them for the ear infection and sinus infection, how easily everyone forgot just how badly my son reacted to antibiotics both times he was put on them... oh wait, that's right... they didn't have to change the 40 diapers every day that made his lil bottom bleed, or sit up with him all night in the hospital. I just want to scream!!!!
Now the whole thing has me doubting myself.. Could it be that they are right, and I am wrong, or maybe he outgrew it like hubby seems to think. How much do I have to gamble to find out???!!!??? UGH!!!!
I realize you all don't have the answers to these questions, but thanks so much for letting me vent.

One confused mommy,

Kristie

One confused mommy,

Kristie

Hi Kristie (gosh - we have a number of Kristie's here Smile)

Like Jeannine said - diarrhea is not always present in CD/GS. It think studies show that only 50% of diagnosed celiacs list Big D as a symptom. Constipation can also occur Shocked

Lactose intolerance can cause gastro distress (and diarrhea). There are studies that show - if a person is LI - it might be wise to check for CD. It makes sense, because the villi produce an enzyme called lactase - this breaks down the lactose (sugar component) in milk. If a person has CD, those villi are damaged, if the villi are damaged, they're not producing lactase. Once gluten is removed, the villi heal, the villi can start producing again. This is why many celiacs can tolerate some dairy after they heal.

If your little guy has dairy sensitivities - that can cause nasal and sinus issues.

CD is not something you grow out of. Once you have it you always have it. What can happen is that it can to "into remission" for a number of years. Usually this is a seen in the pre-teen & teen years. But...it will come back.

Now - antibiotics - that's a 'nother story. Antib's can and will cause stomach upset and Big D.

You could always order some tests thru www.enterolabs.com.

I wish you luck in getting some answers!
