The following link will take you to 3 questions with answers. The second anser is the reason I'm writing this post. It appears that the Hershey company believes people with intolerances can tolerate a bit of an offending substance without reacting. I for one will be contacting the company to correct their misinformation.
If they state they believe that we can tolerate a bit without a problem no wonder there have been various answers to their gluten free status as of late.

The Almond Joy is my candy bar of choice, but I'm giving it up. I'm officially over Hershey's. [Thank goodness for Mega Size M&Ms.]

Good GF Gravy!!
| Quote: | How is a Food Intolerance different from a Food Allergy?
A food intolerance is more common. It takes more time for the body to react, and the person can tolerate a small amount of the food without reacting. Examples of a food intolerance include lactose, sulfites, and celiac sprue. |
I think their Allergy task force needs some educating!!
I'll try to send an email too... How 'bout the rest of the gang? _________________ Al

I agree, jeez it really makes you wonder with these companies and their information. I had one guy tell me from another company that celiacs couldn't have their soup because it had gluten in it. I asked in what form as everything looked okay on the ingriedients list. He said it had corn gluten. Granted some celiacs can't tolerate corn, but many can? He became very insistant that celiacs couldn't have corn.

Dang - I've been eating Hershey's because I thought it was GF (esp. their baking chips).
Anyone know if Cadbury is GF ?
Noticed on that link this list for wheat containing Hershey stuff...
WHEAT
Common label terms or ingredients on HERSHEY'S products that indicate the presence of WHEAT protein:
Cookies
Enriched flour
Flour
Hydrogenated starch
Wafer
Wheat flour hydrolysate
Common label terms or ingredients on HERSHEY'S products that may indicate the presence of WHEAT protein:
Malt
Modified food starch
There is a few things on this list that I was not aware of - hydrogenated starch being one of them ! Also - note that their modified food starch is not GF....I thought this one was now supposed to be gf in the US ??!???? |

| I just want to clarify. I never said that Hershey's was not safe. I said that we (the celiac community) have gotten various answers regarding the gluten free status of their products. To be certain that a product is gluten free it's always best to call the manufacturer. |

I e-mailed them. I had Hershey's kisses on my shopping list. Scratch that one off!
I have celiac disease and must avoid gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). Even a very small amount of gluten, although it may not cause a noticable reaction, causes damage to my intestines. I have previously called Hershey's, and was told that you list all ingreidents and possible cross contamination. After seeing on your website that modified food starch may indicate the presence of wheat in your products, I am very alarmed. I am also very concerned over "and the person can tolerate a small amount of the food without reacting. Examples of a food intolerance include lactose, sulfites, and celiac sprue." I am not longer purchasing Hershey's products for myself or my family. I will find a company that ensures my safety for our Christmas candy this year. I am very disappointed in Hershey's. I hope this matter can be resolved. _________________ Wheat-free and egg-free since 10/1999.

| TEC I am right there with you. I have tried numerous times to get Hershey's to give me a straight answer and I have been unsuccessful. So I don't buy Hershey's. They make it really difficult to just try and find their answer to the question of what is GF. |

I received this email from Hershey's today:
Thank you for contacting The Hershey Company.
Our product label includes an accurate listing of the ingredients in our products. However, on occasion, the list of ingredients can change. We encourage you to check the ingredient label on the package before you make a purchase. This label provides accurate, current information about all the ingredients in the package.
If you should have questions concerning additional products, please call us at 800-468-1714. A representative will be glad to assist you with any questions you may have.

So this does not address the issue at all about how celiacs can have a little bit of gluten. |

From St. John's list...
| Quote: | Hershey --
Definitely do not list all gluten, per phone conversation with a
senior customer service rep 10/06. You must call company with UPC
codes for any information now. Also, at this time, if "natural
flavors" is listed on the label, Hershey's says they are unable to
tell us if it has gluten or not, even on request. |

So I guess Hershey's cannot be trusted at all.
If they don't know what goes into their products, I guess I won't be putting their products into my stomach.
Email sent. |

Hello...Nestle'!!
| Quote: | December 22, 2006
Thank you for contacting Nestlé. We welcome questions and comments from our consumers.
For several years now Nestlé has been following a strict labeling policy with regard to any of the "Big Eight" allergens in our foods and incoming ingredients. We have insisted that our suppliers notify us if gluten is used in any of their ingredients and yet is not declared on their labeling. Thus, we believe that we have uncovered any potential uses of gluten containing ingredients. Therefore, any Nestlé products will be fully labeled for any presence of gluten or gluten containing ingredients.
We appreciate your interest in our products and hope you'll visit our website often for latest information on Nestlé products and promotions.
