2 slices American cheese (NOT cheese food)
1/2 t salt
1/8 t chili powder
1/8 t garlic powder
Preheat oven to 400*
Cut each cheese slice into 16 small squares. Separate pieces and put in a small bowl. Add seasonings and toss to coat. Arrange on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving about an inch between each cracker. Bake 400* for 7 to 7 1/2 minutes until well-browned and crispy. If undercooked, they will be soggy, so don't be afraid to check them and put them back in the oven for a bit longer if needed.
Cool the crackers completely and store in an airtight container on the counter for a few days.
*****I made my first couple of batches with the garlic powder, but we thought the garlic tasted bitter. The batches I made without the garlic AND salt tasted much better and are quite like goldfish crackers, as I remember them!
edit to add: my recipe says I can do this with any type of thinly sliced cheese. I plan on trying swiss with dill weed.

What exactly is "American" cheese? Is that cheddar, or is it like a cellophane cheese slice like Kraft cheese slices...something you might find on a Big Mac (w/o a bun)?
I'm Canadian...we don't have American cheese here. _________________ Mom of Ty (he's eight) who was diagnosed by bloodwork June 2005, biopsy August 11, 2005, notified on & started GF August 18, 2005 |

American cheese is generally cellophane wrapped cheese slices. Most of the time it is a pastuerized cheese product. Yes, you might find it on a fast food burger. |

Thanks TEC, we call those "cheese slices" or sometimes "Kraft Cheese slices". _________________ Mom of Ty (he's eight) who was diagnosed by bloodwork June 2005, biopsy August 11, 2005, notified on & started GF August 18, 2005 |

| Just make sure it is not labeled "Cheese Food" if you use it in this recipe. Apparently cheese food will not work! |

| I think it is mostly made of oil and not milk - fake cheese, pretty much. |

*phew!* I'm not the only person wondering that!
Though I could've sworn those cellophaned cheese slices were closer to "cheese food" than actual cheese. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

| Many of the "american cheeses" are cheese food - like the "swiss cheese slices" you find in the same area - they are badly flavored cheese food. Scary! |
