I'm not sure whether this should go in the recipe section or here.
My Dad, along with CD, has other allergies (of course!), the worst, IMO, being chocolate. I'm afraid I would just give up if I couldn't eat chocolate (well, probably not, but golly, it doesn't get any worse than that!)

So, has anyone ever used carob powder in place of cocoa, or carob chips in place of chocolate chips? If so, how was the taste?

Since Dad hasn't had chocolate in 30 years or so, I'm sure it would be great if it was even close. Smile

I am allergic to cocoa and it's family. I use carob - people have never known the difference in my chocolate cakes or brownies. I make hot 'carob', too. Most chips have malt in them, though, and the one that doesn't has hydrogenated oils - so I won't touch them. It's a little sweeter than unsweeted cocoa so I always notch down the sugar in my recipes.

That's dissapointing news about carob chips.

Perhaps you could post a cake and/or brownie recipe with carob so I can surpise my Dad. I would really appreciate that. His birthday is coming up in February, so I have time to try it out before then.

Although, as sick as he gets with chocolate, he still may be skeptical of trying anything that resembles chocolate.

I'll just show him your post, and that you are successfully able to eat carob. Perhaps that will calm his fears.

Thanks for the info.

you're welcome. i will take a look to see if i wrote it down - but you could adapt any recipe with the cocoa one-for-one. often, i just pour in ingredients and bake them, but i think i wrote down the brownies. i will do it this week - i'm off to bed.
