Today was our appointment and it actually went surprisingly well.

The first thing they did was take her height and weight - twice for each, just to make sure they were not misreading anything. At 5 years 6 months, she weighs 31 lbs and is 40.5" tall.

She's in the 5th percentile for height... and less than 3rd for weight. However, her BMI is in the 25th percentile, indicating that her weight - for her size - is right on target. She's much smaller than a normal 5 year old, but growing proportionately - and that's a good thing.

I gave the lady the appropriate paperwork, with regards to her food allergies, and had no problems at ALL with it. I was worried about the gluten issue, and she eased my mind.

She did keep telling me that she didn't mean to overwhelm me, as I obviously have a lot on my plate with three kiddos at home. LOL! She gave me many suggestions, product recommendations, and told me to start adding something called "Polycose" to her food... it's an easily digested form of carbohydrates that will subtly add calories here and there, to her foods.

She also gave me a full color food guide pyramid - and before we'd left the office, Brenna and I discussed how we'd make a game out of it. We'll cut out pictures of her favorite foods, and attach them to card stock - coordinating with the color of the food group on the food pyramid. Like, for example... she has to have something from 2 food groups for breakfast. So, she'll chose two colors - and will be able to chose her own foods, based on the colors she choses from the pyramid. And, obviously.... all her foods must be gluten, dairy, egg, nut free!

She *seemed* to understand.... but we'll see once I start all this tomorrow! =)

I am so glad that the visit went well and that my fears were unfounded!

Mrs. P - I really was very nervous going in, but had all my ducks in a row. When I started pulling paperwork out of my folder, she seemed to immediately defer to MY personal firsthand knowledge of a gluten free diet. I was thrilled.

In fact, a couple of times I got a bit embarrassed to tell her some of the things I let Brenna eat. She kept telling me not to apologize or be embarrassed. She kept reassuring me that she "understands" the frustrations when dealing with a picky eater. =)

She was really very nice, very understanding, and very kind. She kept asking if I had any questions for her. She would give me advise on "this or that" - and then she'd ask if I had any questions, or if I was in agreement or disagreement with the suggestion. She never suggested I feed her anything that I know she can't have. In fact... she gave me some suggested food lists, combinations, substitutions and such and said... "I know you simply can't do some of these things, but I'm giving you this for reference to the things you can do."

So, it really was a very good visit!!
