I would like to know how you use weight watchers being gluten free. I have gained a lot of weight since becoming gluten free and need to get rid of about 70 lbs. I know you can not eat their food so how does it work?

Well, it's not like Jenny Craig where you can *only* eat their food. The whole thing with WW is they assign points to food. So depending on how much fat, fiber and calories are in a portion of food it gets x-# of points. And depending on your weight, age and height you are assigned x-# of points that you can eat a day, plus the two other rules, 6 glasses of water a day and five servings of fruit and or veggies a day. You have to eat all five servings and not go over your points. It's pretty easy after the first couple of days.

I think WW makes and sells food because it's easier for people on the plan... they look at the box and say, "Okay that's worth 4 points". Plus WW makes $$ off of it, obviously. But you never need to buy their food. You can use their calculator to figure out how much anything you're eating is worth point wise. I just calculate the fat, fiber and calories for a slice of GF bread and use those points whenever I eat that...

Hope that helps answer your question.

That is helpful. Do you actually have to go to WW meetings or can you buy the guides in a book store? I know I saw their cook book at Costca but I do not know if that includes the guide?

It depends. If you're the more social type, the meetings would probably be best. If you wanna go this "alone", you can just register at their website. I had a friend do that (he didn't want to go to face-to-face meetings) and loved it. The website is really well built; it has all the calculators/planners/guides/etc you need. It also has chatting/IM capabilities, in case you do need to talk to somebody.

I don't go to the meetings because I can't fit them into my schedule, but went the on-line route (which is cheaper too) and that's worked out just fine for me...

Thanks again, I did not know you could sign up online. This still seems rather expensive at $65.95 for the first three months and then $16.95 each month. Seems like I would lose most weight in my wallet. But maybe if I can come up with the money I will give it a try. After all I think I would be a lot healthier if I lose this weight. My brother-in-law has lost over 100 lbs using weight watchers but his wifes mother is paying for everything for him. Wish I had some one who would do that for me!

Spendy? Maybe but it's still cheaper than paying monthly for a gym membership that doesn't get used... Laughing

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum & have been reading about your wt loss endevours...it's very motivating!
I have been attempting to be GF since my diagnosis 1 yr ago. I am asymptomatic, so we check my blood every 3 months...sigh...not down yet.

Anyway, what lead me to the Dr. was an 8 wk episode of wt loss, diarrhea etc. Thankfully she was on the ball & did the bld test & sent me to a gastroenterologist, where a biopsy confirmed her suspision.

Other than my GF struggles, I was quite happy with the wt loss that I had experienced, as I needed it! So ok...we go GF & keep off this wt was my plan....wrong!! I quite quickly ended up putting the wt back & then some with the GF diet!!!!
I am now heavier than I've ever been & feeling quite ripped off, as last summer I was feeling good with about 30 less pounds on my frame!

I was under the impression that I would have trouble keeping wt on with this disease (like my grandpa did). But my Dietition tells me that GF food is actually very high in sugar & fat......"excellent" I thought!!! Here I'm so focused on eating GF...that I'm not even paying attn to the calories...YIKES!!

I'm not sure that I'll commit to WW as, we do eat well, just far too much! Although...the temptation is there, as it's a committment that you feel you must stick with.

I'm sure that if i cut back on portions & hit the gym again....I'll be successful. My husband needs to loose wt as well, so once we get back from our vacation...we'll get back to the workouts & begin to change this lifestyle.

Just chatting with others who are in the same boat is very helpful!
Congrats on all or your successes...you guys rock!!
I notice that this thread is older....hope everything is still going well!
