Hi everyone. I have some GI symptoms I'm concerned about. Will be setting up tests this week. Last year I was dxed with type 1 diabetes, adult onset, and since there's a link between type 1 and celiac I'm especially concerned. Some of these symptoms I've seen in descriptions of celiac, some not. They all come and go in a seemingly random way:
--Abdominal cramping after eating--upper right, upper left, seems to switch off.
--Gas, bloated feeling after eating. A lot of burping.
--Low-grade nausea. Not vomiting. Not related to blood glucose as far as I can tell. Some nausea w/dizziness in the morning.
--Very tired and achy, off and on. "Bleah" feeling. Too tired to exercise.
--Not actually constipated, but sometimes the need to have bm but can't. Muscle strain etc. from this.
--Passing mucus, UGH. (Sorry.) This is sometimes before a bm, or no bm at all. Not really mixed in with stool. I don't have the light/fatty stool I have read that some celiacs have. Don't have diarrhea.
--Something that might be PN. Feels like being stuck with a pin in feet, lower legs, hands. My endocrinologist says I have not been diabetic long enough for this to be a diabetes complication; I don't know if that's true.
I will see a doctor soon, but in the meantime if anyone has any thoughts I would be grateful. Thanks much.

Hi Violet,
Welcome!
I think you have good reason to be concerned. ALL of these symptoms can happen with CD or gluten sensitivity. Yes - even the PN!! Gluten will cause neurological compilations. There can be many causes of PN. You might also see if you can get your B-12 levels checked when they do the Celiac Panel. It's very possible you have some malabsorption issues. B12 deficency is often overlooked in PN cases. You might want to look into B12 supplements. I have PN too. I experience burning, tingling, shooting pain, numbness. Have they sent you to a Neuro for an EMG and Nerve Conduction Study?
Constipation can also be a problem - contrary to popluar belief. Heck only 50% of the diagnosed celiacs present with gastro problems! So the "Big D" is not always a good diagnostic indicator.
Good luck!! Let us know how the doctor appointment goes. _________________ Al
