Is a stick poking you in the stomach, too?

One question, just to see how "normal" this is...

I am constantly dealing with this gut pain that feels like a stick is poking me in the stomach, just to the left of and a little below my navel. I've been GF since February, but do not have a dx of celiac because my dr. put me on the diet *before* all the tests.

Who else has the stick poking them? When and why do you get it? Is there any relief?

I have the same thing too on my right side. Especially in the morning times since switching off wheat. I wonder if it's just our bodies adjusting to the change? Weird.

That's the exact kind of pain I get if I'm bad & eat something with gluten!

Been GF about 4 weeks or trying to! Had a really bad weekend. Started feeling sick Saturday afternoon, really bad headache at the front, bloated, 'gurgly' stomach. Saturday night couldn't sleep, terrible aches in arms and legs. Then I started getting stabbing pains under my ribs. Never had that before.

Its now Monday and I still feel really unwell - headache, nausea. Have I glutened myself by mistake or is it a virus? The sore arms and legs and the stabbing pain are new to me.

I am so confused and feel really down. I think everyone thinks I am a total hypochondriac. They must be sick to death of me complaining when they ask how I am. Think I need to start lying and saying I'm fine. I'm convinced they all think I'm a pain in the butt!

I feel worse now than I did before going gluten free.

How do you know if its gluten or a virus? It sounds like gluten from the other posts but I can't think of anything I ate that had gluten in it!

Hi Yvonne,
I had similar symptoms shortly after going gluten free in February. The only thing that hasn't resolved is that "poking stick" feeling.
It very well could be a virus, but I know I was surprised to find that after getting glutened I had headaches and exhaustion and weird pains in my midsection. One time it even felt like I was getting kicked in the side!
Make sure you're drinking lots and lots of water. It'll help with the gluten symptoms and your headaches, too. Also, find a good vitamin, which will help give you all your daily nutrition requirements while you figure out the gluten free lifestyle.
Re-check everything you ate last Saturday, especially if any of it came from a restaurant or a box or can, and let us know if you have any questions at all.

Thanks a lot for your message. I thought perhaps it was a virus but the 'poking stick' feeling made me think it was gluten.

The only thing I ate different was some GF bread I bought from a shop.

Anyway, I went out yesterday and bought a really good multivitamin (GF) and some probiotics. Not sure if the probiotic is GF - has isomalt and xylitol in - I will need to check these ingredients. The isomalt sounds a bit worrysome. (Had an argument with the woman in the health shop. She insisted wheat free meant gluten free. I restrained myself and didn't smack her - ha ha.)

Its great to hear that other people have similar symptoms. Makes me a little less alone.

I get the same thing. It feels like a stick being jabbed in my stomach just below and to the right of my navel. I've had it for years and it usually comes (i think) when I'm not feeling too great. Other times I seem to get it for no reason. I also get this shooting pain that runs from my navel south. Does anyone get that one? When that happens I can't stand or sit straight up or it will hurt. What is with all these oddball pains?

I get that pain, too. It could be a little diverticulai (sp?) Because of the constipation/diarrhea syndrome, we could develop those pesky little pockets in our bowel.
The other thing I have had recently is kidney stones which caused pain on my right side, below the navel. (My appendix was removed at 16)

I have been gluten free for about six years. My dad was also diagnosed with CD about the same time. We both have pain in the right lower abdomen just below the navel. This usually happens when I accidently eat the wrong thing. Interesting we all have the same pain, and no one can tell me why.

I thought it was a cramp (menstrual) but listening to you all talk about it, it makes sense now. I've had about 4 episodes of it...sometimes faint and sometimes really bad - shooting pain.
