See, this is what gets me. Of all the ways to keep chicken juicy, why do you have to inject it with a wheat-based solution? Same with the Doritos...it's just fake cheese and spices for *&#^$ sake! Come on, people! Take that gluten out and save your company some $$ by not buying 40 zillion tons of wheat.

I don't recall blaming you because I didn't read the label.
I'm not angry with you, I'm angry with myself... and had hoped that my "oops" moment would serve as a reminder to others.
FWIW - I had read that it WAS gluten free. It was on something that I now realize was obviously outdated. And, I know realize that I can't rely on "published lists" by Celiac groups because the lists are OFTEN outdated because of the fact that manufacturing practices change much more frequently than those lists are printed/updated. |

| This morning I was furious to find that Rice Dream contains barley. Why would a company go to the effort of making milk out of rice, then add barley so that all the Celiacs who need Rice Milk the most can't have it. |

I've had enough therapy to know that you're mad at yourself, but taking your agressions out on me. And you were taking your agression out on me in the lovely post.
You're close, but not quite rigght about your list mantra. The lists ARE OUTDATED as soon as they are published. Just like computers...as soon as you buy it and plug it in it's outdated.

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, they are not making Rice Dream for celiacs, they are making it for anyone who will buy it. They are trying to serve the public who is lactose intollerant, vegan, etc. It's impossible to serve everyone all of the time.
It is a drag when there is something we can't eat for what seems like no good reason. We just have to read labels and do the best we can to stay safe.

Suzi -
The package states that while their product doesn't "contain" gluten, they use barley malt in the manufacturing process, which of course, makes it "unsafe" for Celiacs.
Unfortunately, I don't think they make it FOR Celiacs. I'm pretty sure that most rice milks, almond milks, and other milks out there are made more to cater to vegans and those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy.
I do think it's a GOOD thing that they added that bit of information to their containers, however. Since the barley malt isn't an actual ingredient, it would have been pretty easy for them to just not having any information at all about it on the package.
I think, in a weird kind of way, they were thinking of Celiacs by adding that statement to the box.
FWIW - When we first ditched diary in my home... I don't remember ever seeing anything about barley, malt, or anything else on the boxes of Rice Dream and assumed they were safe. I found out, all too quickly, that was incorrect.
Of course, when we were first told our daughter could not longer eat anything gluten containing.... I had NO clue what we were in for!
I do understand how frustrated you are. This IS a frustrating diet. And, grocery shopping is a pain in the patootie!!! |

The thing is almost all Celiac's I know are also Lactose Intolerant.
Most soy milks use barley which just leaves Rice Milk & Almond Milk (at $5 a carton). It is just frustrating that they alienate us! But no bother, I have other brands I will support by buying their products. |

I was LI long before I had any clue about a gluten issue. (My gi said it was a hint.)
Totally unrelated, but when I mentioned the milk issue to my kids' pediatrician he laughed and said, "No one really needs milk of any kind." My two younger kids are allergic to dairy proteins, but my older kiddo isn't - and really LOVES his milk. However, we were told to restrict it for a couple of months while he gets used to the GF diet.
We are doing that.... but, he hates rice milk. I was going to try soy with him - but now that I read your response, not so sure that's a good idea either. Are there any soy milks that are ok??
I don't drink milk at all. I'll put rice milk on my cereal - on the rare occasion that i do eat cereal, but otherwise I stick to enriched juices. |

I was also diagnosed Lactose (& Sugar) Intolerant for about 8 years before being diagnosed Celiac.
During that time I always had soy milk on my cereal. But once I became Celiac found the Soy Milks I liked had barley. It has been a long time since I read the ingredients lists of the soy milks, but the one that used to be GF was So Good.
You might want to try your son on the rice milks with vanilla. It gives them a nicer flavor, I know they are the ones my husband (who is not Celiac) prefers. |

I've been happily surprised with Silk. It says "gluten free" right on the carton. If you're used to having 2% or whole milk around, I'd get the regular Silk. If you're used to having 1% or skim, I'd get the Lite (or unsweetened) Silk. I personally went with the Lite Silk, since I dislike 2% milk. The regular Silk was too thick and sweet for me.
Our local grocery store carries little bottles of soy milk, almost like something you'd pack in a lunch. You could always get a couple of those and try them, before buying a big carton.

Do you have a Walmart Supercenter near you? Their GV brand of soy (comes in Orginal, Vanilla, and Chocolate) are ALL GF!

Not that I drink a lot of milk, but as far as I know I am not lactose intolerant. So there are some of use out here, if not many.  |
