Hi, my name is Chris, and I was diagnosed with DH a short while ago, and have positive blood tests for Celiac, but luckily I don't think I have any symptoms besides the rash.
I have been GF for only a few weeks now, and have read a lot and am doing well. However, I just bought a loaf of Millet bread made by Food for Life. In huge letters it says "Wheat and gluten free" on the front, and says it is specifically formulated for people intolerant to gluten. However, after reading the label (and eating a slice) it lists Rye flour as one of the last ingredients!! Is their any way this is really GF? I feel betrayed. I think I might email the company - foodforlife.com.
Well I just thought I'd see what people thought.
Have a nice day and beware for "Food for Life"

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the board.
Ahhh, I think I see the problem...
The Food for Life Millet Bread is listed in the Wheat free section - not the Gluten free section. This would explain why Rye would be in the ingredients. This loaf only says Wheat Free.
This is easy to get tripped up on..I did too at first. Gluten Free is free of gluten which is found in wheat, barley & rye. Wheat Free is free of just wheat - nothing else.
Here's a list of Food for Life Gluten Free items.
Glad to hear you are doing well!! Keep up the good work. This diet has a steep learning curve - you will make mistakes starting out. It's OK...just learn from them and move on. Please don't be temped to cheat just because you feel no other symptoms...you just might incurr damage, but don't know it.
Take care, glad you found us!! _________________ Al

I got this off of the CSA Web site (www.celiac.org)...
"Product Alert
Food for Life Baking Co., Inc.
To answer any concerns regarding Food For Life Baking Co. Wheat & Gluten Free Millet bread in the bright yellow package: CDF has been advised by the company that this bread never contained any rye flour. Unfortunately there was an error in the printing of the label only - and it has now been corrected. The new corrected label lists the ingredients: Brown Rice Flour, Filtered Water, Millet Flour (A blend of coarse & Fine), Fruit Juice concentrate (Pineapple, Peach, Pear) Tapioca Flour, Fresh Yeast, Vegetable Gum, (Xanthan, Cellulose) Sea Salt.
CDF thanks our readers for calling our attention to this. Our thanks to Food For Life Baking Co. Inc. for their diligence in immediately correcting this situation and for supporting the celiac community with many gluten-free products."
I hope this helps you out!!
Happy Friday!! _________________ ~Torrey

Thanks Al, I went to the site too when I had time and I saw that. However, the loaf I bought is identical except it is labeled Wheat AND Gluten Free. I know it seems strange but maybe it was only recently that they started labeling it as only Wheat free. For whatever reason, the loaf I have is differently labeled than what's on the site. I'm glad they changed their packaging though. I hope you believe me that I wasn't just mistaken!!

Hehehe
You're very welcome!
Going GF is a continuous learning curve--trust me, I feel like I learn something new every day about being GF! These forums are great resources, though, and I have to say that Al is definitely a GF guru!!
Good luck with everything and keep us posted to any new things you find!!
Happy Friday!

Torrey - thanks for the CSA Alert!
Chris - I am glad that it was labeling mistake that would not have resulted in sickness (ie saying there was rye in it...and there wasn't). If it would have been reversed (leaving rye out of the list when it really was in there!) - that would have been a much bigger problem!! It was strange, that's why I was checking. I knew Millet was GF. Since I don't eat that bread - I hadn't a clue what was in it or not.
I believed you..I always like to confirm things. We might think you're crazy..but we'll always believe you. LOL! I always have to verify things for my job - so it's kind of an occupational hazzard Like...a customer says their computer is doing this, this & this. Before I do anything...I try it myself to make sure it does this, this & this. _________________ Al

LOL!! Thanks for the vote of confidence!! I agree these boards are great! I need to look at the CSA Alert thing more. I always forget about it. Thanks for reminding us about it. Maybe it should have it's own post... _________________ Al
