Dining in Disneland

Has anyone dined gf in the Disneland or California Adventure Parks? We are going next week and have received info from the head chef there but would like personal recommendations.

Hi Tracy,

I have not personally ate at DisneyLand. But I have heard good things from others that have - they were very accomodating.

What kind of "hoops" do you have to jump thru to arrange this?

Hi Al,
It was really very easy. I called a number, left a message and a day later, Chef Chris called back. He spoke to me for 40 minutes describing each restaurant and what we could order. Most of the places in Disneland have a dedicated fryer for the fries. The bbq/mexican joint has a bbq chicken or a chicken taco with rice and beans (the sour cream is okay). They have Dryers icecream at the parlor so most flavors are okay except the obvious, cookie flavors. At the Carnation Cafe you can order Oscar's special for breakfast with no crossant. Red Rocket Pizza Port has gf pasta and all three sauces are gf. Club Buzz has a grilled chicken breast which is gf. All the burgers are gf without a bun and if you go to the hotel restaurants on the property they have gf buns. They also have gf hotdog buns, micky mouse pancakes, waffles and pizza crust in the hotel restaurants. They also have wonderful fruit platters and salads. The Blue Boyou will whip up something special for you. So as you can see, they say they are very accomodating. I'm anxious to see how well it goes. He didn't have any info on California Adventure. They have a seperate contact.

I assume DisneyWorld in FL has the same accomodations.

Maybe someday...all places will be like Disney. "It's a small world after all..."

I know what you mean. We will return if things go as well as I think they will. I don't know about Disney World but it would be worth calling to find out. If we can get the word out so more people with it are diagnosed, they will have to start accomodating the diet or lose a lot of business.

If you do get back to Disneyland (California) try the Grand Californian Hotel in Downtown Disney. The Storyteller's Cafe there will make almost anything on the menu gluten-free, and it's really good. It's not inexpensive, but a real treat. I went with a "normal" friend for dinner once. We both had salmon, potatoes au gratin and vegetables, and altho my dinner was gluten-free, our plates looked exactly the same. I was a little worried about that, but I had no reaction so I guess I got the right one!

Chef Chris is a charming guy, He has spoken at our support group meetings and is a wealth of info about dining at Disneyland. He has a long page of retaurants and stands where yo can get g-f food. It makes me want to go to Disneyland again!

If anyone has questions about where to dine in So. Cal. please ask, I have a card file on where I eat and what I eat where. I'm always open to hell anyone who is visiting here. I eat out a minimum of once a week. Seldom have any problems.

how close are you to Lake Havasu City? i am here for two more days. Do you have any suggestions for me. I have been here for two weeks and have not eaten out yet. Would like to before I leave.

I'm all the way across California, close to the ocean. If you give me some of the names of restaurants you'd like to eat at, I'll let you know if I have any info on them. I can't imagine not eating out, I do it all the time. I have info on loads of places that are chains, some fast food, some more upscale. Please, give me the names of some. If I don't have info, I may know someone who does.

I haven't been to Lave Havasu since diagnosis.

However, I have been to Laughlin, are you near Laughlin? We ate at the greatest buffet, and I had no problem. The meats were carved right there, and they had lots of plain vegs, fruits, salads, potatoes, even dessert. Ice cream that you can't believe. It was soft-serv and many toppings that were okay. I'll call my son and ask him the name of the place.

But please let me know the names of some of the restaurants near you, I'll watch the site and answer quickly, so you have time to eat out at least once! Enjoy!

Melissa - Laughlin is about 60 miles from Lake Havasu City, so you probably don't want to go there. I just checked with my son. We ate at the Flamingo in Laughlin. I was skeptical. I'm not crazy about buffets. But this really was magnificent, I had plenty to eat, even went back for seconds, and had no problem. I react within 1/2 hour when I eat gluten, so I know when I've been poisoned.

If you give me the name of some restaurants, I'll tell you if I know anything you can eat there.

Hi BJ. Thanks for answering, however I had to get back to Oklahoma. I left Wednesday. I got home last night. (I took my time) I went to laughlin and It was fun. Only had Mcdonalds french fries. (Getting tired of them) Maybe next time I am in either of those cities I will be more prepared. There is a chance I will be going back this summer. My husband is a travel RN and has an ER Assignment in Lake Havasu City. We were there visiting. We ate out there once the whole time at chilis. All I could find. I had a steak with no seasonings and steamed broccoli. thats it.

I like all kinds of restarunts but am really afraid of them. I wish I had more info of the kinds that are safe. I did however stop at Denny's on the way home and they now have a list of ingredients of everything they have. That helped out alot. The papers they had let you know if something had wheat it in. So i finally felt comfortable eating out there at least. It worked cause i didn't feel sick after I ate. i felt just fine. My kids were surprised and my daughter said she finally was able to eat without me not having anything and feeling sorry for me lol. Now we have to find more restaurants. We have a golden corral, cracker barrel. red lobster. olive garden. chilis. thats all I can think of for now. My kids are making too much noise to think any more. AHHHH to go to Laughlin again tonight!!!

Hi again. Sorry you had to rush out of town. Here's what I have about the restaurants you mentioned:

Red Lobster: No seafood seasoning, salt and pepper only.
dressing: red wine vinaigrette is ok

Dennys: Grilled chicken with vegetables is OK.

Please let me know if you have questions about any other restaurants in
Southern Calif. Many of them are chains, and I know something about a lot of them. I had a great sakad at the Redondo Beach Brewing Company yesterday: Harvest salad, with greens, potatoes, artichokes, kalamata olives and feta cheese. Had a balsamic viaigrette which was really good. I had only 1/2 a salad and it was huge.

I'm going to Callender's on Wilshire Blvd. in L.A. on Tuesday. They have many entrees that are gluten-free. I've discovered this by discussing it with waiters there. Gluten-Free items include:
char-grilled salmon fillet
Char-grilled lemon-pepper chicken
Herb roasted garlic chicken
Char-grilled vegs and chicken
steamed mashed potatoes, which can also come with chicken and cheese

I do hope Chief Chris is still their? Does anyone know a phone # to speak to him about eating? Also Where?

As far as I know Chef Chris is still there. I know of a few people who have traveled there in the last few months and have had good experiences. You need to contact Disneyland and get the updated list of restaurants and foods. The number for guest services is 714-781-3463. Lists like the one above are a good place to start, but are outdated really fast. We went there a year ago this month, and were so pleased with how much food we were able to eat. Just so you know, we were not able to find anything to eat at California Adventure, so we had all our meals in Disneyland itself.

Going to Disney was such a great experience for my kids. They are still talking about it a year later.
