I feel the need to comment about the whole McDonald's thing. McDonald's is a contributor to economic (healthcare costs) and social (it's easy, it's fast, it's addictive) decline. People horribly abuse this food, as well as BK, Wendy's, Arby's (insert purveyor of food with poor nutritive qualities here). While there are arguments to be made about free will and choice, as well as cost and quality, there is no excuse for the frequency with which people get their food from these outlets. I know a family who thought it was ok because they rotated where they got their drive-through food every day Shocked ! They couldn't figure out why their kids would not behave and were grossly overweight before they even started kindergarten, or why Mom and Dad couldn't lose weight no matter what they did. Other than their addiction to fast food, they lived a reasonably healthy lifestyle.

I realize that not everyone who eats it abuses this food, but the overall acceptance that this is ok to eat with any frequency blows my mind. That anyone with a digestive issue of any kind would eat this is completely beyond my understanding. There is no "is it safe to eat at McDonald's?" because it isn't - not for people with Celiac, or for anyone who understands that what you put in your body will eventually catch up with you in one way or another. Gluten ingredients/cross contamination aside, it is unhealthy food.

For the record, I am not insinuating that Jayhawkmom is feeding this to her children day in and day out (or anyone else on this forum for that matter), but after keeping quiet the last time McDonald's came up in the forum, I cannot hold back. Whether or not the guy in "Supersize Me" was merely performing a social/medical experiment, the truth rings through, and it is up to us to heed the bell of reality, and be more responsible for our own health, and that of our dependents.

I have to say that I completely agree with you on every point. But, I would go a bit further and say that fast food exemplifies everything that is wrong with our country.

I'd like to add that I am as passionate about letting people know about gluten as I am with my anti-McDonald's stance.

Al-LOL! A friend of mine actually threw his empty McDonald's bag at a guy's window (at a stoplight) after the guy almost ran him off the road. Not the smartest thing my friend has ever done, but he had just finished eating some McDonald's crap. Twisted Evil

TEC - glad I'm not the only one.

*shrugs* I believe everything in moderation. Should you eat fast food every day, all day? No. Should you eat carrot sticks every day, all day? No. It's all about balance.

I think McD's problems are just symptoms, not the cause. People have much less free time than they used to for lots of reasons. Everything's rush rush rush. So of course they're going to grab something fast on the way home because they don't have time to do much else.

That being said, they're such yummy calories... Embarassed

Seriously? Each of our taste buds are very, very different. Mine can't stand fast food...go figure. Have you seen Super Size Me or read Fast Food Nation? Both are very interesting.

Al,
That's really funny! lol

Yup. I love McD's. Always have, ever since I can remember. I probably always will. I know it's loaded with fat and sugars and chemicals (and yes, I've seen Supersize Me), but that doesn't change the fact that I like it.

It just upsets me that they are allowed to put all the chemicals in the foods to make people crave it and want to eat more of it -- and they don't have to tell us! Evil or Very Mad

I think all food additives should have to be listed! Some of it is worse than nicotine!

Hi guys,

Last time i went to McD's (years ago) they had a product list available in the outlet that listed which products were 'gluten-free'. Ha ha... strangely they still made me sick so go figure!

I agree with nancw McD's is just crap food, although to be fair they have started adding salads and wraps to their menus over here (lol not that i'd touch them with a barge pole).

My one occassional treat is a pizza from "Hell's Pizza" mmmmm... i can only eat them when my allergies are behaving themselves but they are SO delicious!

If you are wanting a speedily made food why not try sushi?

I agree, moderation.

Nope, I have not seen Supersize me or read Fast Food Nation. Nor do I plan on doing so. Since I don't plan on eating fast food exclusively, they have no baring on my life. I also don't plan on eating 5000 calories a day, which is what the guy from Supersize me did, if I heard correctly.

If there are families that believe it is okay to eat at places like McDonald's every day, for every meal, they have more problems than just where they are eating. Maybe someone should check the parents for a brain. It does not take a genus to figure out that eating fried food everyday is bad for you. You shouldn't need the government to tell you that it is bad for you.

Yes, moderation is important, there is no doubt.
The main thing that bothers me where fast food and CD come together is that people who work so hard on healing and maintaining their guts, who go to great lengths to eat good, wholesome food, will then take a chance on cross contamination as well as willfully eat food laden with fat, salt, sugar and chemicals.
People who don't have food intolerances/allergies/gastrointestinal disease have easier choices to make, but it still pains me to see how frequent consumption of fast food has become so acceptable and desirable.

To each (tastebuds) his own.

Confused

Because I'm allergic to shellfish, and I hate all other seafood. Wink

I think it's because we all have to work so hard that sometimes McD's sounds really good. Sometimes you just want to have a hot, yummy, cooked meal that doesn't require ages of planning.

Yes, I do frequently want to have a "hot, yummy, cooked meal that doesn't require ages of planning" but McDs is not what I would consider a hot, yummy, cooked meal.

I walked into an office at lunchtime yesterday and could immediately smell the stench of McDs. The smell was enough to almost make me sick to my stomach. I was thrilled the person with whom I was meeting office wasn't taken over by that smell.

Os, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on McDs.
