In fact the OP doesn't know for fact that she did eat out safely because she said something like she is not as sensitive as some of us. Did you read the OP? Or are you simply taking this opportunity to try to slam me? GIG, CDF and CSA all claim it is possible for a celiac to safely eat a weeks worth of gluten-free meals at low level chain restaurants?
It's a balancing act Mary. I might be far right on the dining out issues and you might be far left. But, the right and left both should be able to state their positions. It's up to everyone else to decide where the fit. It's not up to you to sensor me and vice versa. In addition it would be irresponsible to not have both sides respresented.
Frightening statements? Dying a slow and painful death of cancer as a result of not clearly been given both sides of the eating out issue which led a celiac to spend 20 years eating out 7 times a week seems far more frightening to me that hearing an opposing view point. |
The OP stated that they had been on vacation. Eating out while away from home is not only the norm, but unless you pack all of your food for a week and have a kitchen, it is something that you have to do. The OP spoke about breakfast and PF Changs. She/he did not speak about 3 meals a day all week at Denny's.
This is not someone talking about eating out 3 times a day, 7 days a week for 20 years. If someone reads about a vacation trip and concludes that they can safely eat out every meal for 20 years, they are going to have more problems than cancer.
Yes, it is a balancing act. I gave my side and let the OP know that your side was that you never eat out. People should know where their information is coming from. |

Everybody has differently styles of writing and expressing themselves. I happened to be a "sprinklely" type [shhhh don't let that get out Not that there's anything wrong with that...]. You are not - plain and simple.
I will admit it took me awhile to get used to your style. Once I pulled in my "feelers" a bit and looked at the content of the information and not so much at the "presentation" of it...I've done much better. _________________ Al

As I recall, TEC has extreme reactions to gluten, thus it makes sense that her reaction to any indication/confession of an even remotely cavalier approach to dining out would be as extreme.
When I went GF I didn't worry as much about eating out because I wasn't fully aware of the potential perils, but now that I'm further into this GF life, and much more sensitive, I approach any eating out as potential for not only a crappy two weeks to follow, but one more notch on the "cumulative-damage-to-my-body" stick. Experience is a good teacher!
We are all eager for the day to come when we can and will dine out safely and regularly, and there is a LOT of work to be done to that end. Let's proceed thoughtfully and carefully, with full awareness of the risks and the benefits. No one wants to be cut off from the pleasures of eating out, but let's be smart and responsible about it, and pack a cooler when traveling. The OP said she was still traveling and would go into more detail when she arrives home. While I personally don't think Denny's is even an option for GF dining, let's hear what she has to say...in detail.
This forum is a place to both educate and learn. Didn't we all have a teacher we didn't necessarily like, but taught them lessons they remember today? We don't have to hurl spears to get the point across, but sometimes it is that, or just throw up our hands and say nothing. It's good to know people care enough to warn us when we are stepping in front of a moving car. |

Holy cow!!!
Flame off, kids!!!
I just mentioned that I haven't been ill following more than a week of dining out (which is forced, not my choice) I can't afford not to eat at "crappy" chain restaurants.... especially on a business trip!!!
I'm sorry I said anything. Good grief!
I'm new to this whole celiac thing, and to me, not getting ill is simply managing to eat anything without spending the next severall hours having sweaty diarrhea!!!
I've been trying to educate people about this, asking for gluten free menus, passing out the cards my DH made me about how I cannot tolerate even a smidge of wheat... I've talked to restaurant managers about developing GF menus for their clientele. Believe me, next time I'll just be quiet.

Don't take it personally, Beffie. Dining out is a controversial subject. It is a risky proposition and vairous people have various levels of comfort with it.
If it makes you feel any better, I am too broke to eat at even the crappy chain restaurants! _________________ -Colleen

| To those whom I've offended for referring to chain restaurants as mediocre, crappy or cheap, I do sincerely apologize. |
