Is it likely, or even a proven fact, that when you have an auto immune disease, you are more likely to have another or others?
I had to see my doctor today because of arthritis in my hands. He is sending me for testing for rheumatoid arthritis, which I don't think I realized was an auto-immune disease. His reasons were:
1. I have many symptoms
2. I have an auto immune disease already
3. It is in my family genetics
Are we more likely to have other AI diseases? _________________

Hi Danita,
Yes, it's a fact the if you have 1 AI disease, it's possible to have more. Here's some more info on RA: http://www.medicinenet.com/rheumatoid_arthritis/article.htm
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20021215/2259.html
| Quote: | | Approximately 95 percent of patients with celiac disease exhibit specific Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class II alleles DQA1*0501 and DQB1*0201.4 Patients with type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease,5 Sjögren's syndrome, primary biliary cirrhosis, Addison's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, selective IgA deficiency, and alopecia areata may also exhibit similar genotypes and are at risk for gluten-sensitive enteropathy (Table 1). Because many persons have these genotypes and only a few develop gluten-sensitive enteropathy, investigators have hypothesized that other genes or cofactors may be involved.1 |
