Wow, the 800 Taco Bell phone reps told me they have no GF foods. I called two different times this year. I never quite understand all the descrepencies in info sometimes. On the Wendy's GF sheet the chili is suppose to be GF but I got sick twice so I gave that one up. Though I did notice al fair number of people on this forum list that as ok.
I was really longing for Taco Bell just 2 days ago because I was out and about and not near any food but them. But I didn't give in. |

Check the web site. It is interesting. They cover their backside by saying nothing is GF---however if you leave this off or order it that way.......
In other words they can make the above list GF if you hold the sauce or ground beef, etc. Just be careful and explain your needs to (preferably the manager) the preparer. |

Due to the nature of the way the chili is made, there is NO WAY Wendy's will EVER guarentee that to be gluten free. In most cases... it's NOT.
I worked for Wendy's for two years right out of high school - and I often helped make the chili. It ain't pretty, folks!!!
As far as taco bell is concerned, I get the tostadas often. It's a corn tortilla with beans, lettuce, and shredded cheese. I love them! But, anything with their meat, forget it. |

My biggest concerns with any of these fast-food places are:Even if the food *I* order should be GF, how many other non-GF things were just recently prepared on the same frying surface, countertops, and so on (i.e., cross-contamination)
The level of understanding of what CD is. When I consider how little the average person understands of the disease, I can only assume the average teen working the late-shift at Taco-Bell is going to know even less about it.
Perhaps I am paranoid or overly cautious but I have not eaten out at the fast food places in years. _________________ Mike

I don't think you are paranoid, Mike. I printed out the GF list from the Wendy's site and I take it with me when we go there. Some preparers know us and our problem, others don't. One preparer did not see NO BUN for our burgers and started peeling the burgers off the bun to put into the little container they give you. I had to insist that he not only set those burgers aside for another use, but that he throw away the contaminated container and use a fresh one. Then I explained why and he was very accomodating and kept apologizing. Then I realized...DUH... they wear the same plastic gloves to prepare my NO BUN sandwich as they do to prepare the burgers WITH the buns. So right there we have the CC issue!
The only really safe food to eat is the food we prepare ourselves. Does this mean I never eat out? No. But if I choose to eat out, that means I'm choosing to take a chance on getting sick. Most times it isn't worth the risk unless I'm traveling and need to rely on the convenience of a restaurant.

And that is the EXACT reason why Wendy's chili is NOT gluten free. Those burgers that are "woopsies" are taken off the bun, thrown into a metal pan in a fridge under the grill....and then made into chili the next day.
There's gluten all over those pieces of meat. And, even though they boil the meat the next morning.... is boiling enough to rid the meat of gluten??? |

These stories of buns being peeled off of a burger and such remind me of when I was out to eat with a business associate who is vegetarian, and he orders the Fettucini and Chicken without the chicken. So, it comes to the table with this big chicken breast lying on top of his pasta. He tells them it is a problem. They take it away, but in sight distance pull the chicken off and bring it back to him. They could not understand why he wanted a completely new meal and refused to eat the one, since, they did remove the offending meat (in their minds). Sad, but that type of situation presents itself to all sorts of persons on a controlled diet. _________________ Mike

Resurrecting this old thread to post a great link to the taco bell ingredient list. http://www.yum.com/nutrition/documents/tb_ingredient_statement.pdf
Note that their taco shells have oat fiber in them, making them not GF. Just goes to show that we can't assume anything is GF. Always check and recheck!
BTW - I don't eat at Taco Bell (Taco Hell, as my DH calls it ), but I thought someone else might find the link useful. _________________ -Colleen
