Hi,
I recently was diagnosed with Celiac, and at the same time with Diabetes, & High Cholesterol. I also have Lupus, Fybromyalgia, & Thyroid problems.
For the last 3 yrs. I have had chronic diarrhea, of which none of the Drs that I seen would take me serious. I just started with a new Dr and she did a blood test for Celiac, and it came back positive.
Now I am getting very frustrated trying to figure out diets, what I can have on one diet is restricted or forbidden on the other.
Can someone help, how many others are out there with the same problems that I have.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Lesley,
Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear you've got all that "stuff" going on. It's not uncommon for gluten intolerant to have those conditions. The GF diet should help with those too.
I don't know a great deal about the diabetic diet...other than watching sugar and carbs.
Can you give us some specifics of what's OK for one diet, but not OK for the other? Maybe we can figure something out for you.
Hang in there...doing this GF thing does take some time to get used to. It took me about 6 months to be fully comfortable with it.
Take care!! _________________ Al

| I also have Diabetes and Celiac. I have had a hard time controling n=my blood sugars since the dx of celiac. Are you on insulin? You should be able to eat everything on a celiac diet that you can on a diabetic diet. You just have to count your carbs and take insulin for it. If you are type 2 then maybe you should talk to a dietician. I have been type 1 for 31 years and that is really all I know. Liz in MI |

Thanks Al, & Liz,
I am a type 2, so I am planning on going to Diabetic classes.
I do have a question for you guys, since I found out that I have Celiacs I have been gluten free, as far as I can tell, but I still have the runs, is this normal? My husband doesn't seam to think that it's celiacs, because many times before I finish eating I have to go, and the food that I have eaten didn't include gluten products.
Thanks for all your support :

By the way Al, what part of WI are you from? My in-laws live in Hudson just over the river from Minneapolis St. Paul.

Hi Lesley and wlecome! How long have you been on the GF diet? I've been GF for just over 3 months and I would say that it took 2 months before my GI problems mostly faded away, but even now I am bothered occassionally. I thought that when a person went GF that you would feel better pretty quickly, something my father insists happened with him, but it does not seem to be the case!
Good luck and stick with it. The GF diet can't hurt anyway, at least as long as you can work it in with the diabetes diet.

Thanks Becky,
I just found out last week, so maybe I haven't given it enough time, I thought if that is what is causing it, then when you quit eating it, it should stop, guess I am not patient enough. a Taurus thing I think.

Hang in there Lesley! I could take a couple of weeks...to a couple (or more) of months to really settle down. It's possible you might be getting hidden gluten too. It's EVERYWHERE!! Just take it one step at a time. Weed out the big offenders 1st (bread, pizza, cake, cookies, pasta, beer , and then work your down. Make sure to check out the Forbidden & Safe Ingredient lists I have posted in the Proper Foods forum.
I've heard/been thru Hudson! I live about 3 hrs east of there in east central WI. Fond du Lac, Oshkosh area (about 20 min away from either).
Hope you poke around here and learn as much as you can! It can only help

| Many Celiacs are also lactose intolerant. That could be the cause of the runs. Shannon |

Darn!! My dad has Parkinson's and his sugar is high too. VA nurse told me he should have nothing white as it is higher (normally) in sugar. I asked if he could be on my GF diet with rice, etc.. she responded emphatically "NO". Geez, I can certainly appreciate the corundrum we both are in here!
I have a family member with Lupus too and told him to check for cd or if they had tried the gf diet. Hope they will give it a try for themselves.
I posted a site previously on a veterinarian who had been dx'd with CD five years ago and he suggests the GF diet for Parkinsons as well.
Now my father was told no white stuff but wheat bread is fine. He is 79 (will be in August) and would like to address going GF with him as well. Diabetes runs on both paternal sides of my family, so I am concerned as well I should be right? lol Not funny but thinking positive here.
Do you have a dietician? If you do please relay any and all information for us ok?
Hugs your way from

Hi
I'm taking diabetic classes next week, am curios to see what they say about the combo of GF, and diabetic diet.
Nobody in my family is Diabetic, or has Lupus or Celiacs, so I don't know where I got it from.
My blood sugar is down now, last night I had a tiny bowl of sherbet, kind of test to see what it would do, & this am, my sugar was 96.
My Dr. has not mentioned any thing about a biopsy. Can you tell me what kind of procedure it is?
I was hoping to make it up to Albuquerque to some of the big health food stores to see what is available GF, because our town does not have any place to buy those products.
Hope every one has a great weekend.

HMMM~~~ you know I have read that there can be a 10% of someone's family to present with CD. They may carry the gene ( you got it genetically from one of your parents ) but just haven't exhibited any symptoms. Funny and rather intimidating thing is, they could be having damage done but just don't know it. That's why I am a believer that if you have the gene then go the gf diet way. Gut instinct here. pun intended? not! lol
If both parents carry the CD gene all of their children will have the genes! DNA is a whole subject matter in and of itself. I don't know enough to argue its points but my background in biology tells me to 'microscope' the vantage points of knowing if you have the gene that can show other autoimmune diseases. _________________ I Am Someone Special

Both of my parents are deceased, so I guess they lucked out that they were able to get through their life, and not be bothered by it.
My mom was never sick at all, unlike me that has been that way since I was born. I was a preemie, and I wonder some time if that could have something to do with all my problems. I was raised in Mexico and did pretty well till I moved back to the States in the 70's and even now when I go back down there I can even eat off the street vendors and don't get sick! go figure.
I just returned form 3 weeks down there, we ate out most of the time, so much fresh seafood. Now I come back here and it starts all over again. I'm very upset with my Drs. nurse, because just before I crossed the border she called me with the results from the blood test, and told me that the CD test came back negative, so just go and have a good time, and don't worry. Well last week when I went back to the Dr. and she came in and told me that I had CD, I told her no that's not true because your nurse called and told me that I did not. Well she said don't know where she got that from here is the results, 0-19 is normal, and yours is 56, so I asked the nurse, and her response was I thought I wouldn't worry you so I told you to have a good time. What if this had gotten sick from it, and would not have known why. Oh life is so much fun.

I would suggest getting a dietician. What I am finding out is that i have to have a referral from the doctor to get a dietician. My step son is diabetic, I have celiac but we are learning to eat or rather I am learning to cook for us but I have no idea. Dietician would be the answer if it were me. Good luck and I hope you feel better. |

I haven't had many experiences with dieticians...only one due to a stay in the hospital...but I have heard that some are not always up to date on the GF diet. As always...double check the information you receive - it can never hurt!
BTW - Mary Joe - love the new sig!! _________________ Al
