Hi Rick,
Welcome to the board!
Wild Rice itself is gluten free. However, if it's packaged in a "dinner" or a box mix - there maybe gluten added to it. At that point, you'd have to read the ingredients or call the company that makes the product.

| Quote: | | wild rice = Indian rice Shopping hints: This isn't a rice, but rather a grass seed. Compared to rice, it's richer in protein and other nutrients and has a more distinctive, nutty flavor. The downside is that it's more expensive than rice and takes longer to cook. It's especially good with poultry and game. Cultivated wild rice isn't as expensive--nor as flavorful--as "wild" wild rice. Substitutes: wild pecan rice OR brown rice (not as chewy or flavorful) |
Is there a particular product you are wondering about? _________________ Al

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I was pretty sure wild rice was a "grass", so I thought maybe it would be related to wheat. Glad to hear it is GF.
Although I have a lot of freinds who will be disappointed because they would be happy to take it off my hands. |

I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, and rice is a locally grown grain. I buy some of the local brown rice, and mix in some wild rice with it, and that approximates the typical "wild rice" commercial mixes that are available in supermarkets. Uncle Ben's comes to mind. However, the flavoring packet in the Uncle Ben's is suspect. I don't know what's in it.
So instead, I simply mix in herbs and GF spices and create my own "wild rice."
Goes great with broiled or grilled chicken or thick pork chops.
GF cooking has opened up all kinds of alternatives for me! _________________ Freed from Gluten, July 2006 |
