I watched the first episode last night. The first season (king crab) is always my favorite. The men don't get hurt as much and the crabs actually look like crabs, not brown spiders.
Although...I'm debating if I want to keep watching it. I really love the series, but I feel bad for the people. They're just regular, hard working guys, trying not to get themselves killed while doing a dangerous job. And now they have Hollywood-born, "green" camera men (and their +$10,000 equipment) to worry about. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I'm sure Discovery is making it very worth their while to have them on board. Those Captains are businessmen. They are not letting Discovery film them just out of the goodness of their hearts. Since they share the wealth in the catch...I suspect they also share the Discovery Wealth too.
I would also venture to guess that those camera men are probably out of harms way [a much as you possibly can be and out of the deck hands way] most of the time. It may look like the camer is right there - but they long lenses and have great zoom properties _________________ Al

All true, and I'm sure some of them appreciate showing the rest of us how that steaming crab actually gets to your plate. It's probably just me, but I was getting a "leave us alone, just let us fish" vibe when Mike Rowe was interviewing them. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I've seen the show a few times, but didn't realize it was a series. I'll have to check out the local listings. It's really interesting.
Have you guys seen Dirty Jobs? That show often makes my mouth drop. The show that was off the cufff was when the host took on the job as a San Francisco(I think) garbage man. Amazing! |

Dirty Jobs is cool too. The host of Dirty Jobs [Mike Rowe], narrates DC.
You could have a DC pool...betting on who gets the most crab since they have a crab count through out the season.
DC puts a whole different light on what it takes to put food in our mouths. These guys bust their butts and put their butts on the line to keep us in seafood. Here's to you, Crab fisherman guy! _________________ Al

So, it's always about crab...just different varieties. I could google the answer, but you know.
Let's have a pool! I'm always up for a friendly wager especially if the prize is bragging rights. |

Here's their website. Lots of stuff there!

Most crab - Snow Crab and King Crab. Last year one of the ships did some Cod Fishing before the crab season. _________________ Al

That would make an awesome beer commercial.
Has anybody been watching their Planet Earth series? It's only 11 episodes long, and it just started a couple of weeks ago. DH and I caught the first night, but missed last weekend. That show is amazing. It really illustrates how diverse our planet is, and in high-def too! I'm seriously considering buying the series when it comes to DVD. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Os - that special does look cool. I have not seen it tho.
I've been thinking about the pool...there's only a handful of ships [maybe 5 or so, I can't remember]. I'm thinking assigning #s to the ships - you'd randomly pick a number and then thats your ship for the season. Thats kinda how we do the Survivor pool - we draw names from a hat. _________________ Al

I love that show. Did you see the one where he was working with the exterminator? I have never seen so many cockroackes in one place in my life. Gave me the heebie jeebies for days. Or the one where he was cleaning up in the sugar plant? What a mess. _________________ -Colleen

My favorite is still the ostrich episode. "They're not right. They're not right in the head!"
I think that's a great idea Al, but it sounds like it'd be a small betting pool. You might also have to figure out # of crabs/size of boat, versus just # of crabs. Some of those boats literally can't hold as much as their larger brothers (sisters?). _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

We've been letting the DVR pick it up and then watching it later. It's visually stunning. I would highly recommend it. We've seen all the aired episodes so far.

I did see the exterminator one - super creepy crawly! I loved it! But the one that grosses me out the most is the Las Vegas Buffet Scrap guy who turns all the left over food into hog slop. UG! The smell must be horrendous. Seriously I think my gag reflex kicked in a few times... _________________ Cheers!

LOL!! I do remember that now that you bring it up.

Hmmmm good point. The Corneilus Maria I think is a much larger ship than several of the others. Maybe a percentage...I wonder if we can find out how much their boats weigh "empty". _________________ Al
