Anyone hear of this? It was an ingredient in a Popsicle. I've contacted the company but not heard back yet. Just wondering if it rings any bells... Could be anything really.... _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |

My sense is that it is probably one of the safe Gums (locust bean, gum arabic, etc) like the ones listed on celiac.com. I could not find any specific information about carbohydrate gum in a web search.
If it is Popsicle brand, they are part of Bryers (Unilever), and disclose all gluten ingredients.

Do you have a list of gluten-free products?
Answer
* Unilever Ice Cream is a member of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network and the Food Allergy Resource and Research Program.
* We recommend consumers read the label each time before buying our product.
* If gluten is present, it is clearly listed in plain language on the ingredient label (i.e., wheat flour, rye, barley, oats, and malt).
* We do not publish a list of gluten-free flavors.
* We work closely with ingredient and packaging suppliers to verify gluten in all ingredient components including natural flavors, colors, and spices.
* Some flavorings may contain ethyl alcohol. However, because the alcohol is distilled, they would not pose a threat to anyone who is gluten intolerant.
* We apologize for any inconvenience, but it's the best and safest way for you to know.

I wrote to Clan Thompson for more info and they got back to me as follows...
Hi Amy,
I finally have some info on the carbohydrate gum. Great White popsicles are made by Good Humor/Breyer (a Unilever company). They will not give a list of gluten free products and say that all information will be on the label. If an ingredient comes from a gluten source, that will appear on the label, too, according to them. As for the carbohydrate gum...the representative I talked to said it comes from a green vegetable - not gluten containing. That's all the info she had. I hope this info helps!
Best wishes,

I LOVE what Clan Thompson does. Even before I "purchased" their list, I was in the habit of e-mailing them with questions. They always got back to me quickly and were so friendly that I wanted to support them and paid for the list that they have researched. It is not nearly as extensive as I had hoped, but again, they are so happy to research any and every query.... tho I try not to ask too much....
When it comes to calling companies and getting gluten info I have had some success, but it is not something I like or am comfortable doing. So getting info from the folks at Clan Thompson is great for me.....
I also REALLY like their newsletter which comes by e-mail and has lots of interesting articles. _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |
