I keep reading about people ordering meats that have been grilled. Is there not a concern about cross contamination issues? I also have learned that some resturants get meat that has already been pre-marinated before it comes to their resturants. Maybe I am too cautious but how do you know that the area of the grill that your meat was cooked on was clean enough? It seems very risky to me. I would love to order off of the grill but the one time that I tried it, I was sick the next day. They assured me that the area that my steak was cooked on had been cleaned. The steak had not been pre-marinated. I will not do that again. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way about this subject as I do.

This is part of the "is eating out safe" debate. I suppose it comes down to: do you trust the restaurant? The steak that made you sick could very well be due to CC issues. Or it could be that it just didn't agree with you.

I would not feel safe doing this either. An alternative might be to ask for your meat to be grilled on foil.

I only eat out if I have to because it is just too difficult to get anyone to understand about cross contamination. For example:

At In & Out they know me by name and the manager "thinks" he has my food prepartion down. But he really doesn't. They still end up cross contaminating the food -- I see them do it. I have had them give me my money back many times now. Or sometimes, I just let the kids eat it.

Outback, they try hard but the staff often doesn't understand. Like taking shortcuts by just removing the croutons from the salad instead of remaking it completely.

Or Chili's which has a "Gluten allergen" menu that try hard to get it right but don't understand using a clean grill or foil or separate pan and even flip the grilled meat with the same tongs they used for the other meat.

I can not get upset at them because often they are trying really hard but just don't listen closely enough or are too busy to really care enough to understand the impact on me etc.

So I take the risk only when I absolutely have to which leaves me from eating out with friends. I find the whole thing really isolating.

Yeah, unless the place *really* knows me and my issues, I don't chance it.
I got REALLY ill from a grilled menu item at my work cafeteria and vowed never to do that again--it hurt my tummy too much!!! Rolling Eyes

Grilling on tinfoil is a good Idea ( or so I thought ) until we asked in a restaurant if they would do this for us, ...... well they looked at us like we had asked them to stick pins in their eyes!!

Its just too difficult to eat out, life is easier if you just eat at home Crying or Very sad

I dont even bother anymore with those *so-called GF menu* Way too many cc issues. In my book never worth the risk.

One place I go for grilled meat (and its the only place I go)

The only thing cooked on the grill is steaks, burgers, chicken and pork loins.

The meats are not injected, premarinated, seasoned----JUST MEAT! Very Happy
Its a ranch style steakhouse, and I've never gotten sick. well.....maybe a little tummy ache from eating way too much Embarassed Smile

The safest place for grilled meats, aside from eating at home is "Ma's Kitchen"! And theres never any waiting to be seated either Very Happy

take care all,
Ann

During family vacation, a nephew was grilling chicken for fajitas. I knew it was going to be a bust for me, but I inquired anyway:

Me: So what's in the sauce?

He: (this, that, more...and) soy sauce.

Me: Can't eat it.

He: Why?

Me: Soy sauce is brewed with wheat.

He: You sure? Most of it will probably burn off.

(Another helpful family member chimes in): Maybe you can cut the sides off.

Me: I'll eat at home.

Went back to my place (we rent three houses at the beach to accommodate everyone) and had the Tuscany Bean soup, rice crackers, salad with Annie's natural dressing (that Tuscany stuff!) and topped it off with a Blue Bunny fudge and vanilla bar with a baseball game in front of me.

Moral of the story: No one understands this better than we. No one is more careful than we. Making the decision to do what's right for us is never wrong.
