Hi you all,

I've been on GF diet for three months. I'd had diarrhea, bloating, gas, pain, joint pain in hips and fingers, anxiety, and depression for two years, all starting after my son was born, after rotavirus, mastitis, antibiotics, and severe stress and exhaustion.

ALL my symptoms stopped after about a week on the GF diet...and then about three weeks later started to return. I then tried Gottshall's Selective Carbo Diet and dropped all the other starches plus gluten. I added some yoghurt (had been dairy free for months already) -- the yoghurt didn't seem to cause any problem -- it's the only dairy I eat. Again, I experienced huge improvement for about another week.

Now I have all the symptoms back (thought not quite as bad) despite being GF and cutting out corn, soy, dairy, etc.

I'm wondering about: bacterial overgrowth? Sugar sensitivity?

I'm hugely frustrated and don't know where to go next for help.

Any advice out there?

What have been other people's experiences on the road to recovery? Is it possible it really is just the gluten and that it's just going to take more time and the recovery process is uneven like this? Or is it more likely that I've got underlying issues that have emerged since going GF?

I can't figure out what I had such enormous improvement and then backsliding after that, even though my GF diet didn't change.

Hey Kate, welcome! Hmm...

1. It could be that you're sensitive to something else as well.
2. It could be hidden gluten.
3. It could be that you take a bit longer to heal. The length of time depends on the person.

I would start a food diary if I were you. Something like "what I ate, when I ate it, how I felt before and after."

Bacterial Overgrowth is a definite possibility. I am dealing with that right now. It took a bunch of pressure from me to even get it looked at. I started taking enteric coated peppermint gels to self treat the overgrowth at first with some success. I am also taking Probiotic's to raise the good bacteria. Telling my doctors that got them to test my bacterial balance. Read this: http://www.celiac.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1000&p_catid=79&sid=91hH9H1k27tWEOj-15107264059.f7 and read this: http://www.celiac.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1441&p_catid=5&sid=91hH9H1k27tWEOj-15107284859.eb

I found out I was not absorbing enough nutrients as well. Our systems have basically been starving us of nutrients due to the nature of the intestinal damage. Taking supplemental Vitamin D, A and B12 have helped me quite a bit. My adrenal system is still not up to speed, either. Celiac effects a bunch of body systems because of long term malabsorption.

The points brought up in the previous post are way valid too.

Don't get discouraged...it does take a while to recover. I've been diagnosed and gluten free (except for accidents) for 5 years. As I had fewer gluten symptoms, I found more intolerances that had developed while I was undiagnosed (2 years). Corn, soy, nightshades (tomato, potato, green pepper), onion family...
And then there's the problem of "gluten free" food that is made in places that also produce gluten containing foods. Invariably I will get sick from one batch but not another, until I figure out what it is and give it up.
Plain food is good. Fruit makes good snack food. And, the plus is....it's pretty easy to keep pounds off when the food is boring Laughing

Two possibilities come to my mind:

1) You have more offenders... common ones are the nightshade and lily families. Watermelon does not do any favours for many, many people. So just because a food is SCD legal... that doesn't mean it's legal for you.

2) Die-off: When bacteria die, they become waste in your system and your system can react to that. You can help your body 'clear' faster by doing a couple of days of just soup broth/freshly squeezed juice and epsom salt baths morning and night, if possible.
