How much is an American cup

Forgive me for posting this again, I post this question a few weeks ago, but I cant find where I posted it, or else the post didnt appear. Can someone please tell me how many ounces a cupful is? I see lots of recipies from American sites quoting a cupful of this or that, and i'm puzzles how many ounces this is??
