I am really confused on what I can order when I go to a Mexican restaurant -not a fast food place like Taco Bell. What is safe? Thanks for your help.

I have rarely risked eating at a mexican restaurant, and have paid the price once or twice. Many sauces have flour in them, and there are many possibilities for cross-contamination. Proceed with caution.

I find mexican restaurants to great places for GF food.

Ask to make sure the chips are 100% corn cooked in their own dedicated oil.

Mole's and red sauces quite often are thickened with crackers. So asking is very important.

Refried beans are usually beans, lard, and maybe chorizo sausage. Rice can be made from flour containing chicken broth.

I have found that tacos de carne asada and fajitas are the safest. The tacos are just unseasoned bits of steak, usually with a tomatillo salsa and pico de gallo -- with corn tortillas.

These dishes are also very simple so the kitchen is doing a lot with these

One place I usually go to is very helpful.

It all depends on your restaurant. If it's a mom-and-pop place you should try talking to the owners. If it's a franchise call them up.

We have had good success with Mexican Food restaraunts. Very Happy Ina usually orders guacamole and corn tortillas. Also, many times the salsas are GF. We live in Texas and many restaraunts will make what is called "guacamole live." The guacamole is made right in front of you...you actually get to see everything that goes into it (fresh veggies). The making is some what of an art form. Very Happy It comes out to be a large batch and with corn tortillas, Ina is usually satisfied. Also, tamales are often GF....you just need to ask......We Texans LOVE our Mexican food!

I still miss flour tortillas, nice & warm, with butter melting on them.

SNAP OUT OF IT!!!!

Okey-dokes! 100% white corn tortilla chips, tamales & corn husks, salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo...

Just ask to make sure they don't use any wheat or flour in it anywhere.

If they only speak Spanish, say "no trigo, por favor," or only "masa harina."

Trigo = wheat
Masa harina = corn flour

Rags,
I have nothing to "snap out of it". I am not complaining. I was just needing some input on what I could have.

I hate to say it, but corn tortillas are so much better than flour ones.

Why do you hate to say it? Smile It's good when a food that's friendly to "us" tastes better than the silly gluten-y kind. Smile

Kentsmom,
I believe Rags was telling herself to 'snap out of it' not you.

Good point. The sad thing is that most people won't even try corn tortillas. And they taste so much better. But, granted, the ones you get at the store aren't half as good as the ones you make. I usally make them. AND so does my neibor, and she is from Panama. I got lucky there!

I've never had homemade tortillas. Is there any way you could be persuaded to post the recipe? Wink

Glutenfreeda seems to have a pretty popular recipe over here (must be subscribed to view).

Um... I use a corn mix called, *runs to look* Maseca. Just add water! It's not just for tortillas tho. You can use if for enchiladas, tamales, atoles, etc. My mom called the company and (1) it is in central america, (2) it is a devoted corn-flour company. They make really good tortillas.
